I live in Stow and its a nice easy place to live. Cheap, clean, affordable but can get boring after a while. If your going to Kent I'd suggest someplace off of Graham Road, which makes it an almost straight shot east towards campus.
I've never liked Tallmadge. Not sure if its the circle where the bubbas in their monster trucks try to run you over or the seedy strip clubs on the west side of town. I'm sure 20 years ago it was a nice place but it looks like a dump now.
Word of advice - In Kent right before you get to Stow there is an area called Silver Meadows. It has an apartment complex and houses in a track. Do yourself a favor and AVOID SILVER MEADOWS!!!

But, if it is an actual toss up between just Stow and Tallmadge I would sooooo pick Stow over Tallmadge. Someone above mentioned that Tallmadge is urban. No no no. It's more rural than anything. Nothing to do there altho there is a good restaurant by the name of Delaney's (on the circle). Tallmadge is pretty boring, actually.
Both areas are safe but Tallmadge doesn't have too mcuh of anything. Summit Racing has it's headquarters there (if you're a car enthusiast). Actually, Summit is the only worthwhile place in Tallmadge (I could be biased because I used to work there tho).

Stow has more of the suburban amenities one would expect, like Wal-Mart, Lowe's, and other strip plazas.
Tallmadge... urban, no, unless people are thinking of the very western edge where it touches Akron. Even then... no. That part is just ****ty.
Ultimately with Tallmadge you get older and less developed. Not that its bad, but you can see the development into the future is not headed that direction. Stow is a good location though.
Although if I were going to Kent and I had to pick between the three I would choose Kent, even if you stay a little bit further away from the U. But that's just me.

If you like things to be quiet, I wouldn't recommend living close to the university in Kent. The Kent-Stow area is great (I've lived there for 3 years while I finished up my undergrad and grad degrees). It's close to everything, quiet, and safe.

Stow is a fantastic place for people, pets- kids ect. Kent is more of a college town- but with great little food places.

Are the comments about Tallmadge that were made being made about the same Tallmadge I am familiar with? Tallmadge does not have any strip clubs. The strip clubs you must be referring to are in Akron. Tallmadge is convenient to everything. If you move to Stow and have a need to get somewhere at rush hour, have fun on 91. Tallmadge has lovely neighborhoods, great schools, a number of great places to eat and is just a all around wonderful place to live. So far as the comment about the "Bubbas on the Circle". I have only one thing to say, "Stow-billies".

$50 says that someone going to college is not going to want to live in Tallmadge.
Tallmadge has no strip clubs (I don't know where that came from) - I'm pretty sure it has an adult video store though, but who cares? Tallmadge is boring, however.
And BHA - 91 isnt the only road in Stow. And honestly, if you're talking about traffic in general (not only rush hour), its still not as bad as, say, West Market Street in Fairlawn.
*And for the record, Kent and Akron people don't get along because of the college rivalry situation. And for as much as Kent people say that Akron people run off at the mouth about Kent State sucking, the Kent kids do the saaaame thing. It has nothing to do with resentment as 'Andrew' mentioned above. I've heard Kent State people say that they would never go to Akron because there are shootings on campus and everyone carries guns lololol and for that I say 'the only bad thing about Kent State is that they stopped shooting.' If you know the infamous story from years ago, then you will understand that statement lolol Bad, I know, but I heard it from someone else....

cookie cutter suburban hell. If you're starting a family and need to be in the northeast ohio burbs, it's a very safe community. If you're young and dislike strip malls, awful weather, no culture, and a community at large that resembles a Disney set, stay away.
I couldn't think of one reason to move to that area as a young person.

Both towns are relatively safe. I went to KSU and lived in Cuyahoga Falls (Yorkshire Woods) and loved it. BUT.... there is not a whole lot happening by way of clubs or bars inless you want to go downtown Kent, Akron or the Valley. All too far for to drive if your drinking and you can forget public transportation.
