We're considering a move to either Alliance or Massillon. I'm not sure which city would fit better and my fiance has the opportunity to transfer to his company's locations in either city. I started out looking into Canton but found that the neighborhoods were generally not good. Is Alliance or Massillon any better? Schools aren't so much of an issue as my kids attend Catholic schools and both cities have those. Specifically we were looking into a house in Alliance near Mount Union and few houses in Massillon near Whittier Elementary on the NE side (800 block). I'm looking for something relatively safe, at least safer than Canton. Our budget is $90K so the "nicer" areas of Stark County like Louisville or North Canton aren't really available with that budget and the houses that are in that budget don't fit our specific needs for a house (no garage, too small, etc). If you had to choose either Alliance or Massillon which would you choose? I think we might fit in better in Alliance as I get the impression it's more of a "blue collar" type town which is what we are used to. I've tried looking at crime maps online but I'm not really getting clear info there. Thanks in advance!

I don't know much about Alliance, but I did grow up in the Massillon area. So, of course I'm biased. I really would choose Massillon, though, if only because it doesn't seem so isolated.

Historically, the NE side of Massillon was more middle/upper-class, so maybe that's why it doesn't seem so blue-collar. If you're interested in such things, take a look at the 4th street historic district, to see what I mean.

As for safety, I really couldn't say for sure, anymore. My great-grandma lived alone without any problems on Yale Ave. for many years, before she passed away in 2001. It was a stable neighborhood, so it's unlikely that it would have changed a lot in the last 15 years.

There are other parts of Canton (not downtown) that I would look at that are more affordable before living in either Alliance or Massillon including Perry Township or Glenoak (eastern part of Canton).

If you decide to work in Alliance, I would even look around Hartville area as well.

If you decide to work in Massillon, I would also look in Navarre area as well.

I grew up near Whittier and its really a mix of blue and white collar there. I can't speak on Alliance because I have honestly only ever gone out that way a handful of time but I have heard nice things. Both cities are pretty comparable so I don't think you can go wrong.
