Having lived in Akron over 10 years, I can tell you that my favorite part of town was the Highland Square-Merriman Road area. I did not live there, but I had many friends who did.

Merrimen has some BEAUTIFUL homes and you get a lot of house for the money, but it is close to some bad neighborhoods. I had a friend who lived around there and I hated driving through the bad neighborhoods to get there. I guess any city is like that, though. If you like Stan Hywet, Hower House is also nice. Cuyahoga Valley national park is beautiful. Don't expect too much to do in downtown Akron. I like the city, but other than one or two blocks, it is very quiet and barely anyone lives downtown. They have what they call the Artwalk once a month in the spring/summer/fall and that is very nice. Shaker Heights is another area that you might like because the homes are stunning, there is a lot more to do in the surrounding areas and it is very close to Cleveland. Akron has very few good restaurants. The best restaurant by far in Akron is the Vegeterranean. Downtown Kent is very charming and has some nice old homes. I live in Kent and I love the city because it has a lot of character and is very safe, but there are a lot of old homes that have unfortunately been turned into rental properties because of the University.

There are wonderful parks - the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, which includes the Towpath, as well as many other parks, including the Seiberling Naturealm. Honestly, as far as parks and music festivals, etc. goes, we are quite blessed to live here. Summer is fantastic, as well as Fall. Winter is way too long and grueling. We do have local ski areas if you like that. Lots to do, lots of history. Canton has some nice areas, such as the McKinley monument and park, but I do agree with the others, Akron outweighs Canton. Yes, Cleveland is within a 45 minute drive and Lake Erie, has some decent beaches within a 90 minute (or less) drive.

Atleast you're objective about it.

By the way...greeneyedbum...where is it you are located now?
