What do canton residents think
For those of you living in Canton, what do you think of the city being listed as a "dying city?" Do you feel the article in Forbes is correct or do you disagree?

Do you happen to have a link to the article?
I am from Canton, and 100000000% agree with that assessment, by the way

Here it is. JR was kind enough to post it. That's where I found it. I am a former Native Clevelander and hate reading this stuff about anywhere in Ohio.

Canton has been dead for years. It kind of gasps some life twice a year...hall of fame game time and before and during the Massillon/McKinley game. Other than that...not much happening in the city.

Totally agree^^^^
I used to live on 7th And High NW (Where I grew up) and I used to say that the only time they picked up Trash in the city was The week before the Hall of fame stuff started, and that they would the dump it right back where they got it.
There just aren't enough jobs there to support the economy. I used to work at GE, and that was one of the best, if not the best places to work. They could close (and probably will) at any time, because they can get that work done cheaper elsewhere.
Sad, too, because it is not a bad area to live if you live in the suburbs ie North Canton, Jackson Twp, etc... Downtown and the surrounding areas always are going to be in bad shape, no matter what they do to spruce it up.
I have always suggested that they should tear down a huge part of downtown and build an outlet mall, or some type of huge "Town Center" that keeps sprouting up. There is really no reason to go downtown in Canton, save a restaurant, the Palace, and the library, and even then you don't want to go down at night

Don't give me credit for posting that link and starting this mess.
Here's the link to the actual Forbes article, though.
America's Fastest-Dying Cities - Forbes.com
Generally, I think the article is rather stupid. What is the purpose of the article? Why are these cities "dying" if they even grew a little bit? Based on their information, I'd say Canton is only stagnant with the least growth. But even Canton still grew by a small percent.

Thanks for putting the link in. I have to agree that the article is stupid.

I lived in Jackson Twp. and on Maywood Pl SW (on the corner of Maywood and Dartmouth Pl SW.) When I moved to Jackson I barely ever went into downtown Canton...except for maybe the rib cook-off. There is NOTHING to do in the actual City of Canton. I mean you can only go to the Hall of Fame so often! It is a shame though. I remember back in the day when they used to decorate Cleveland Ave (at Tusc) so nice for Christmas. Plus the little ice rink was a nice place to go as kids. And today, if you are there at night, you better have your pepper spray and hide your wallet!

If nothing is going on, why is Canton so unsafe at night?
Downtown Youngstown is, statistically, one of the safest places in the whole county. But, there are people (mostly from the suburbs) who are still afraid to spend time there.
Maybe Canton should follow Youngstown's lead and start having more stuff downtown? Events Calendar

Ive been to Canton a lot of times. Seems like it gets way overshadowed by Cleveland, Akron and even Youngstown. The city, though better than Youngstown, is still pretty depressing. Its in the Cleveland/Akron area but is on like the extreme southern edge. Dont really know much else there except for the Hall of Fame, and neither do most people.
