I have some questions for ya...first, do you want to live on your own or are you looking for roommates? Apartment building or house? What price range?
I live in the Highland Square area, which is 5 minutes from downtown (if that) and not much further from the University and its great! Granted Im not a college student, but Im 28 and a 'young professional'. Most of the tenants in my building (for instance) are college students, young professionals - just people around the 20-30 range living on their own with jobs/going to school.
There are a lot of apartment buildings in the Highland Square area, altho I have to let you know that a lot of them are old-school. A lot of what you will find are buildings built in the 20's with crown moulding, large baseboards, radiant heat (which is the best heat ever, mind you) and wood floors. The neighborhood is safe - I go walking at night all the time. It's not ghetto or run down. People are friendly and its very walkable. Rent usually runs like this:
Studio (350-400 or so sq.ft) = about $420/mth
1 bedrooms = $535/mth
2 bedrooms = $635+/mth
You usually don't have to pay for a garage and typically only have to pay for electricity (mine runs anywhere from as low as $8 in the winter to $40 in the summer---btw you will more than likely want a window A/C unit for the summer months). Some of the buildings have gas for the stoves, but that will typically run less than $10/mth. Water and trash are free and cable can sometimes be free depending on the building you are in (shh).
The Seville on West Market is a beautiful building, altho if you want to make use of the large garage from the apartment building next door, its an extra $35/mth - otherwise you would need to find a spot on the side streets. Speaking of which, Im extremely protective of my car and very particular as to where it gets parked...I have had to park on the side streets before I got a garage and honestly, it is more than fine. I have never felt that I had to worry about my vehicle.
The Avalon on North Portage is well taken care of (as are most of the buildings on N.Portage). There are also houses (duplex-style) for rent on some of the side streets. I can point you in that direction of you like. I walk the neighborhood quite a bit, so I can give you numbers and pics if you would like.
One more hint - stay on the north side of W. Market. No crazy partiers, no ghetto, no worries.
Hope this helped a bit - sorry so long. Let me know if you need any more help - Im a pro on apts out this way lol
