We lived in Canton for 61 years before moving to Florida. Preiouse poster is right about staying out of SE and some NE areas. There are decent NE areas if you stay well NORTH, say north of 19th Street. Canton is split by Market Ave running north and south and Tuscarawas running east and west. Downtown is trying (and I emphasize "trying") to rebound as many small cities are today. The "burbs" are based on townships...good but expensive are Jackson to the northwest, Plain to the north, Perry to the west. Canton is a town based on manufacturing. Timken Roller Bearing, Republic Steel, etc. North Canton is in Plain township and as the name says it is north of Canton but really close. If you drive up Market or Cleveland Aves you go from Canton to North Canton without a beat skipped. North Canton was basically built around the Hoover Company (which Magtag bought and ruined and sold and it's now closing) West of Canton is Massillon, smaller but a nice town. Canton is half and hour south of Akron, an hour south of Cleveland and Lake Erie. Rt 77 is the main north-south interstate running thru the area.
Claim to fame is the Pro Football Hall of Fame (huge festival in August every year) For a small town there are a lot of restaurants locally. Belden Village area just north in Jackson TWP holds most of the shopping for the area.
Housing costs are reasonable. A lot of commuters work in Akron or Cleveland but built homes in Canton areas to save on costs.
The schools in Ohio are paid for with property taxes. This is a sore spot for lots of folks since the Federal Gov't has been telling Ohio to change the way they pay for education for years but no results.
All in all it was a good place to raise my children. Low cost of living. However, most of our college educated children do move away. Hopefully, that will change. Canton is a medium sized, midwestern town.
Having just moved from Ohio to Florida, I can tell you there are a lot of little differences in tax bases, insurance, etc to get used to.

If you got about 19th you can't go too far because of the growing 33rd St. gang. But you are right there are some nice houses around Market and a small section in the NE.

Do you know anything about a area called Lake Mohawk, Ohio. My husband and I want to move close to family and also live on a lake. We are considering Portage Lake area and Lake Mohawk. Any help would be great...

I grew up in N. Canton, and lived in Plain, Jackson, Perry and Canton city. I got tired of commuting to Brecksville, so I moved to Akron. Of course the school systems in the suburbs are better than the city, like most other urban areas. I still have family and friends in the Canton area, and chose Akron because it's located between Canton and Cleveland.

I would say Portage Lake. I was born in Canton, Ohio. I moved to Akron in the 2nd grade, but we moved to Beaver, ohio when I was in the sixth grade. I love Akron. My bother lives there now. My uncle, who owns Zett's Construction, lives right on the lake. We go and visit him a lot. If you go up and drive around the area, there are Arrowhead stones everywhere. They are to show the path that the Indians used. I don't know much about Mohawk Lake so I guess that is why I am saying Portage Lake. It is something that you would have to see for yourself.

What is Canton like? Well, you had better love high school sports, and especially football, because that's pretty much the only real culture to speak of in and around the town. Oh, and Pro-Football Hall of Fame week once a year, during which the city really comes alive to a surprising degree.
Other than that, Canton is a mostly depressed and run-down city with a virtually non-existant economy, as has pretty much been the case since its' manufacturing industries departed in the late 1970s and 1980s. And all that really means is that your kids, if you have them, go off to college after high school and have no reason whatsoever to return upon graduation, if by chance they are looking for serious employment and a future.
If they aren't quite so ambitious, the Belden Village and Massillon-area retail districs are home to a rather nice selection of big box and boutique stores looking for fresh fodder... I'm kidding. Seriously though, full-time retail employees, especially management, actually can earn a decent living wage with benefits. But those are about the only opportunities for advancement in the Canton-Stark County area, and you'd better not have too much of an attachment to having your nights and weekends free.
As other posters have mentioned, the city of Canton is presently in the process of redeveloping its' Downtown district. There's very little nightlife, or really, 'daylife' to speak of there at the moment, but perhaps that may change. In the meantime, there's always Belden Village Mall and tons of high school sports!

Akron's unofficial motto is, "At least we're not Canton." If you go to North Canton, or Green, then it's fine. Central Canton is truely an armpit. Akron is much nicer.
