Canton is BORING!! there are no jobs, no nightlife nothing to do. BOTH malls suck. The housing market is terrible I can remember seeing houses still for sale today that were for sale four years ago!! Outrageous!!. The newspapers have no jobs and the ones tey do advertise get so many applicants that the job market is flooded. Even the nurses that I know can't find jobs here!! The two local hospitals have not hired in ages. I have lived here my entire life and I am itching to get out as soon as I graduate and am able to relocate. The only good point about Canton is that it is relatively inexpensive to rent a decent home or apartment here and the cost of living here is pretty decent. But with no jobs it makes thing pretty rough either way. I would suggest you not move here. Almost everyone I know is trying to get out of here!!

Having lived in Minerva for three and a half long years, I would only recommend Lake Mohawk in nearby Malvern if you are really into a rural lifestyle. Lake Mohawk is a gated community with its own police force that strictly enforces the ridiculous speed limits of 15 and 25 mph. It is a strictly residential community, popular with folks who want a second home in the sticks. There is virtually no commercial development nearby - Minerva has an IGA, Pamida, Drug Mart, and a True Value hardware, and a few shops in its downtown. The nearest all night gas station is in East Canton, several miles away as I discovered one midnight with the tank on E. Shopping for virtually everything involves a trip to either Canton or Alliance where there are WalMarts and strip malls. Cravings for common fast food like Taco Bell or Wendy's will result in 20 mile drives to Canton or Carrollton. The school district has K-12 in one building in Malvern, with about 60 students in each graduating class. The towns virtually shut down for deer hunting season and the county fair, and NASCAR is probably the most commonly watched sport.
Portage Lakes are much more convenient to Akron or Canton, while still remaining somewhat rural in character. The state park is right there, there is shopping in Green or Jackson/North Canton, and the schools offer more opportunities.

We know friends of friends who thoroughly enjoy living on Lake Mohawk. I hear it's very nice.

My step dad lived in canton, there really to be honest is not much there, it isn't dangerous either, same with akron, some parts are dangerous of akron but not THAT bad and with Akron, there isn't much there, that is why is has one of the lowest traffic rates of cities over 100,000 or something like that.

I live in Canton, not too far from downtown. People will tell you that there are much better areas around like North Canton, Jackson, etc. but better for what?? Shopping at chain stores?? Living in boring neighborhood allotments? The whole area is blah and devoid of any kind of culture. I'm living here because I have to for the moment for my husband's work.
Akron is 30 minutes north and, no there is no city bus that goes that far. Akron is pretty much a larger version of Canton. You have to have a car and drive EVERYWHERE. Also, if you are not from here it is very hard to find your place because most people were born and bred here (maybe moved away for college but then moved back to raise a family). A big topic of conversation is high school football.
The good side:
The Palace Theatre, downtown
two good local restaurants downtown: Peter Shear's and Fedeli's
Taggart's ice cream
the YMCA system in Stark County
decent library system
Can't think of much else.
