Crime in Canton??
Is there a lot of crime in Canton? I was thinking of buying a house close to the downtown area. I've been visiting the city whenever I get a chance, and it looks really nice. But I read a post that said stay out of Canton because of the crime, drugs and hookers. It also says the schools are no good. Does anyone have any knowledge of this city?

Well didnt you say you were moving to Warren? But Canton has come along way from what it was. The city has changed and i believe in the last census it was growing. The schools have gotten better. But i already told you about the really good suburbs of Canton. The city itself has brought in alot of entertainment. With also building the new Belden Village Mall. Like you i also think that Canton is a really nice midsized city. I always go through there on I-77 and there is always construction going on. Any more info just ask.

I did say I was moving to Warren, but I found a house in Canton that I really like. Just keeping my options open and trying to get as much info as I can. I have lived in Lorain all my life, so moving to another place is a really big deal for me.

Is there a lot of crime in Canton?
Yes there is, primarily in the SE and NE, and to some extent in the SW, less in NW.
I was thinking of buying a house close to the downtown area.
Define close to downtown. If you're talking an area roughly bounded by Fulton Rd to the west, maybe Cherry to the east, and to 6th or 9th north and south, you're brave. Very brave.
There are plenty of great neighborhoods just a bit further out, like the whole area between and around Cleveland Ave NW and Market Ave N north of 15th St. as an example.
I grew up in Canton, my family still lives there, and downtown is a place we go only if we have to. There's not really anything down there aside from the Palace, the library, and a couple of restaurants.
It also says the schools are no good. Does anyone have any knowledge of this city?
Any other questions, just ask. School test scores are available online. I am very happy with the education I got in the Canton City Schools, they learnded me real good.

Thanks for the info, but I ended up buying a house in Warren. I did like Canton, but after reading their newspaper and seeing that there was always some kind of crime going on day after day, i decided thats not where I want my kids to grow up.

Warren is a crime-ridden cesspool
Warren has a lot more crime than Canton. Warren is economically depressed, poor, low educational level. Warren has the prostitution problems, murders, drugs, etc. Canton is a much more economically vital city, probably a heck of a lot safer than Warren. Warren is a toilet, plain and simple.

Orwell,
I have to totally disagree. Most of Warren is just fine! I go for walks downtown all the time and am never scared! Did you know that the Eastwood mall has a higher crime rate than the whole city of warren.........although, i'm sure that has more to do w/stolen cars. Anyway, most of warren i very safe........the only areas i would be concerned about are the SW side and some area off of Niles Rd. Otherwise i think you have a skewed vision of what Warren is really like.

Not accurate....
MOre crime in Eastwood Mall than in Warren? I sincerely doubt that. Warren is not as bad as Youngstown, but that is all I can say for it. The South and West sides of town are dangerous ghettos. Warren usually has around 5 homicides a year. I have family who live in Warren, and who are looking to move due to the crime.
Cortland is a very quiet community. Don't assume that you are safe in Warren. There are many robberies, gangs, and murders are nothing unusual. Warren is a secondary crime hotbed to Youngstown in the Mahoning Valley.
