I live about 15 minutes from Akron. When I turned 18 I got an apartment in Akron because they are the cheapest around. I stay away from ghetto parts so I found a nice one right near Goodyear Heights Metro Park. Unfortunatly, wherever you live in Akron there is a hood very close by. My neighborhood wasnt ghetto, but right down the road it was. There were groups of cops on bikes on summer evenings patrolling the neighborhood there. There was a drugdeal where 2 people were killed right down the road. I worked at the mall in Akron for 4 years, on a random Monday around 4pm I got mugged leaving work. A week later I was at a friends house near campus and a bunch of guys with guns and masks came in and robbed the house. Near campus is definatly a bad area where there is rape and drug deals a lot. I know students who have had there house broken into, tied up, gun to their face, and robbed.
I thought my apartments were ok, until the cops raided my neighbors house for guns and drugs. Then when I came home late at night or early morning I noticed cars in the parking lot with the windows smashed...pretty often. (luckily my car was a peice of **** at the time).
I will never live in Akron again, check out Stow, Kent, Hudson, Cuyahoga Falls, they are very close to Akron but much better place to live.

If you think Akron is rough than you have never really lived in a rough city. I lived near campus for 5 years and never had anything happen to me and neither did anyone else I know. If anything the area around campus has improved since I lived there.
Sucks you got mugged, but the malls are located in more suburban type areas away from the central city. That could have happened no matter where you lived.

I agree with you, 5Lakes (sry Aniroc).
I went to the UofA, lived on campus and knew people that lived off campus near the university and no one ever had problems.
The only instance I have ever experienced is when my then-boyfriend and I lived on W.Market (near Rhodes)...his car was broken into (but mine wasn't and it was parked 5 spaces down from it).
Otherwise, there have never been any issues, thankfully.
Bad things can happen anywhere you live, irregardless of where that may be. However, if you choose to live within a few blocks of a bad area, then you shouldnt be surprised if it all starts trickling down your way.
Aniroc I don't know if you have bad karma/luck or you look like an easy target to criminals but nonetheless, it still sucks.

Boy have times changed. I went to the Univesity of Akron from 1975 to 1977 and I never felt unsafe there.
There is not such thing as a safe place anymore.

I went to the UofA from 98-03 and I never felt unsafe once.
I've never felt unsafe living in the city of Akron either.

I def gotta give some love to Highland Square. Very trendy area. A lot of cool places to rent out. As a UA student it's ideal, but it also has the highest average income of all the Akron neighborhoods. As city girl said, it's extremely diverse. We have a lot of the post punk/hippie crowd, but at the same time you can find the hoard of senior citizens who stood outside for a day to protest the grocery store issue(that's a whole 'nother story ).
Anyway, HS sounds like as good of a fit as Akron can offer. Good Luck!

Sorry, but it sounds to me like the OP isn't looking for that close minded suburban crap that you so much prefer.
Akron has it's bad parts, but so all cities. If you live near one, there will be issues.. I always assumed this kind of thought process was common sense...

It's supposed to be common sense. I like your thinking, ksu-.
I think it's funny when one person has a horrible story about an area and it somehow snowballs into everyone they know having a horrible story about the same place.
Akron is not Compton or inner city NY or the murder capital of the world. Akron is also not Cuyahoga Falls or Fairlawn or Hudson (thank god).
Akron is Akron and it's not unsafe or a horrible place to live. It's a cool place and if people just took a drive from Medina or Stow or whatever 'pretty' town they are from, opened their eyes and spent some time, then they would see that.
Sometimes I just think the bible-thumping, cookie-cutter, boring individuals that populate this world like to paint everything white like their pretty picket fences in front of their cape cods and shun everything that doesnt match their narrow-minded picture of perfection.
*No offense to anyone in particular, of course. Just my opinion.*
