Yeah I've gotten them. Don't you realize the recurring trend in those emails though? Here, let me sum up how every single email goes, you can fill in the blanks.
"Police are investigating a report of an _______(insert crime) and _______(insert crime) overnight in the __________(street name) south of campus. The suspect is described as a ____(physical attribute) black male, about ____ years old, _____(height) tall with _____(insert some creepy detail like, "one eye and a third leg). He was wearing a _____(some sort of "gansta" like clothing)."
Okay, here's the key part that gets me every time:
"A house south of campus was entered through an unlocked door."
I swear to god, every single email contains that phrase.
To be honest, the area south of campus itself isn't all
that bad. There's big parties at night on Sumner St all time. Not to mention Sumner Fest where thousands of kids from colleges all over the state come to party. It's the area a few miles south of the college houses. I'd say like south of Thorton is the cold hard ghetto of Akron. Those thugs routinely come up on Exchange to stumble around and rob kids homes every once in a while.
Believe me though, this new stadium will bring business and more students into the University Park area. This area is poised for a turnaround, even during the recession. As enrollment at UA continues to rise, "tha hood" is going to keep getting pushed further and further south.
Personally, I'm going to be living in Highland Square. Most of it is pretty expensive for a college student, but I found a nice apartment for less $$ then the places south of campus(and MUCH nicer). My old roomate got a place East of campus, I think on the other side of Route 8, and he's just renting out a whole house with 12 other guys he knows. He says the area isn't that bad and he can walk to campus so he's happy.
Don't buy into those fools on Ohio.com too much when they put down the area south of campus. I can promise that within the next few years you'll see some serious gentrification there with this new stadium in place.
