Quite honestly I don't rank south of the campus as being all that safe relative to other neighborhoods. I don't think you're going to die but there is a reason a lot of the apartments are cheap. I've stayed smack in the middle of that neighborhood with people getting beat up, had a guy a few doors down get shot in the yard, and then all of the normal obnoxious college behavior. Sadly I think the cheapness of it attracts a lot of non-collegiate wackjobs. If it was just me alone I'd rather drop $300 on a sleeping room in HS than $400 on a studio over there... Really the only spot I know of that is significantly cheaper than HS for individual space in the UA area is east of Route 8 off of Exchange and that where you're leaving college territory and entering full blown hooker and crackhead territory.
