I'm glad the recall vote failed. Not because I like the Don as a person. He can be overbearing, pushy, intimidating, and I know he does special favors for his friends and creates jobs for them that they might not be fully qualified for.
But he has done good things for this city over the years. I have seen him make a fool of himself in bars. We all have our individual faults and they become more apparant with a little alcohol added to the mix. I have bought him drinks and accepted drinks from him.
But there is a reason the people of Akron have let him be Mayor for over 20 years.
I think this recall thing was a personal vendetta brought about by personal conflicts and those who want to make everyone believe they have no individual faults. No one is perfect.
That doesn't mean a person can't do the job they were elected to do.
Akron has lost a lot of the industrial base it had when Don P first became Mayor. We are no longer the "Rubber Capital" of the world. We are more of a service jobs town now.
In my opinion we would be much worse off if the Don hadn't planned on ways to replace what has been lost through other venues.
In each one of his terms he has brought improvement to the city and tried to make it better.
Do I agree with all his ideas? Certainly not.
But looking at the big picture I have to admit he has done more good than bad and Akron is still as good a place to live as any other city in Ohio. Maybe better than most.
I want to stress the fact that I am not his buddy. I don't like him as a person.
But I have to give credit where credit is do as far him doing the job he was elected to do.
