yes The Don is a strong leader, but he is to strong,I know many city employees who have terror stories about him. they say its his way or else, they were scared to sign a recall petition due to his retaliation.
some of his ideas are great, like replacing the inter belt with a medical corridor....but others like selling the sewers and paying for residents college was bizzare....in my opinion 20 years is long enough!

I have drank with Don P in a certain not to be named bar.
I witnessed him offering $100.00 for an hour of the barmaids time. (She turned him down). I know who he was dating while he was still married. We all called her Twitchy.(because of drugs?) She worked at the bar for a short time. I know about his open heart surgery. I know the other city official who always accompanied him to drive him home from the bar. I know the car they came and went in.
I saw him puke in the rest room after too many drinks.( And then give Twitchy a big slobbery kiss afterwards. YUCK)
I know local Cops who hate him so much they would welcome the chance to charge him with something except for the fact it would cost them their jobs.
Does all this make him a had Mayor?
No.
It just makes him human. None of us are perfect.
He must have been doing something right for the city or he wouldn't have been re-elected so many times.
Do I like him as a person?
No.
I think he is an egotistical better than thou butthead.
I know people who played football with him at Kenmore High School.
All these years later they still talk about his "I am the great one" attitude.
Will I vote to remove Him?
No.
Akron has lost a lot over the years due to economic decline of manufacturing jobs. Especialy the rubber industry and the machine shops.
Was that Dons fault?
No. It was the fault of the U.S. government allowing companys to move out of the country to avoid taxes and pay cheap labor and not controlling overseas trade and the CEO's of said companys not caring about American workers.
Akron was on the rebound untill the current economic crises hit that was beyond the Mayors control.
Although things aren't great, we are still better than we would have been under someone elses leadership.
He has done some good things for the city and has kept us afloat with a future to look foward too.
Am I his buddy?
No.
Do I respect him as as a Mayor?
Yes.
Could I document all I have said with names, places, dates, times, etc?
Yes I could.
Except for the fact that those who would back me up think he is just human but a pretty good Mayor.

I have the same opinion as Robhu. I have served him drinks also. He likes to party. Does that make him a bad person? Depends on your beliefs. Either way, there will not be a replacement that will have the immediate impact to replace Don's accomplishments. That took years to build and this is not the correct way to replace him. The residents had their chance last year.
Voting no.

Yeah, and your post brings up a good point. Many people will be voting in spite of the idiots who brought up the recall.
And the real question is, is Mendenhall the answer?
I don't think so.

I don't think the Akron people really care who Don is. He's pissed a lot of people off over the years but he's produced results. Besides, since when is being a nice guy ever a good thing in politics? Would you like Jimmy Carter to run for mayor in the next election?

Excellent point. The nicest, most wonderful guy in politics ever was probably Carter, but what'd being nice do? This holier-than-thou attitude regarding politicians is ridiculous. He's an ******* - that's why he got in to politics.
There's only one way to unrust a rust belt city and that's to be innovative, to bring in new ideas, to revive downtown, to bring in new residents, to bring in more business - Don's not doin' bad, last I checked.
I'm sure glad it was worth wasting so much tax payer money, though.

you dont see the favors he gets for and from his freinds....my going on about this is just beating a dead horse but you need to look beyond the pretty downtown.
you want him...... you got him so I'm done with this subject....untill he starts his Jedd policy and taking my money.
enjoy the allman brothers/Eric Clapton tribute bands tonight....I'll be there!
