HS, yes I considered moving back to the sq,I still go once in a while for coffee although since Dodie's closed it is much harder (and less enjoyable) to make the trek.
my 25 yr old nephew was in town last weekend and went to the HS theater to see transformers he still misses the sq.

city girl,
now is the time to buy out here, with the perks obama has placed and the prices in the dumpster, you dont have to buy on the lake, lots of neighborhoods have dock privleges (for the used boat you will need to enjoy the water!) trust me you will enjoy it. also at the clock tower there is the best kept secret of the lakes Bialys rest. home cooked meals for around $10.00 (like dodies) great breakfast too!
take the time to come out and look around!!

@SquareBetterThanAll - I wouldn't mind staying in HS but I can't afford the homes in this area.

@htlong - My boyfriend used to live in Portage Lakes but was forced to move from there when his former wife wanted to stay closer to her mom. He wants to move back but needs to sell the house he is stuck in now since the divorce. He doesnt want to live in HS or anywhere in Akron unless its the PL. I'm more than fine with living near the water, so it doesnt bother me. I just doubt I'll be able to find anything worthwhile in the range I want to spend - not that I can find anything in HS with what I want to spend anyway.....

Prices seem to be all over the place but I haven't really looked too much. I know there was a small house on Kathleen that was listed for like $20 or 30k - I'm sure it needed systems work. But you can get a 203k rehab loan... I have no doubt you could get it up to speed cheaper than buying another house. Downside is the house is small and boring (1950s or 60s).

Looks like it's gone already...

What ballpark are you looking to be in?

Ew 50s or 60s (barf) lol
I like houses that were built in the 20s and 30s but have a modern twist to them. The kind that still have the character but are equipped with modern kitchens. Im a huge fan of Arts & Crafts or Craftsman style homes.
So far, I have yet to find anything worthwhile.
As far as price.....as low as I can get lol
No higher than $120K - and that is pushing it.
The idea is that I buy the home on my own and then bf can help pay to live there. He is not excited about getting another house in his name because he hates the one that he has. I realize that amount isnt going to get me anything spectacular, but its ok because I don't want to be house poor by any means. The idea of owning a house kind of scares me though because I don't want to be stuck with something I cant get out of.

Oh I thought you were going to say 70 or 80k or something really low.

Up to $120k you should be able to turn up something, but yeah it may not be perfect. I was in the same price range and when I bought my house I did end up having to sacrifice some style (i.e. interior woodwork is fairly plain and limited) but I also wound up being in a great neighborhood (not just HS, my actual street/block) and I'm in the Firestone cluster (no Buchtel!)

Keep in mind due to the market you can probably negotiate the price down and/or get add'l funds from the seller for rehab or closing costs etc. When I was buying the housing market wasn't even all the way into the toilet yet, I would imagine things would be even better now (for a buyer, that is!)

Plus that $8,000 tax credit based on 10% of the purchase price.

Come on, great time to buy!

But I would say as you mentioned you should be ready to stay put for a few years, or buy really low to be able to get back out again if you need to.

55 Mull Ave, Akron, OH, 44313 - MLS ID#1548113 - Single Family Home real estate - REALTOR.com® I turned that one up thinking you were really low balling. Not too exciting from the exterior but the wordwork is nice and I would love to have that mortgage payment. On top of that it's on that super quiet cut off section of Mull (not the part that runs to the xway) that is pretty nice as I recall. Plus it's 4 blocks from Portage Path.

That's it, I'm buying it. Someone take this house that i have now off my hands.

(I like bargains if you can't tell )

P.S. Have you seen what they've done to some of the houses on the first block of Beck off of Market? Amazing rehabs (at least from the outside). One of them I looked at about 2-3 years ago when it was up for sale after foreclosure... 45 Beck I think... it was atrocious on the inside... well, and outside. Driving by a few months ago I almost didn't recognize it. Looks 1000% better.
