We've read the prior helpful posts re: towns near and around Akron and Cleveland with good school districts and a quaint town center. While Solon and Chagrin Falls seem like great options commuting from Cleveland, we're afraid they might be too far to commute from Akron (UAkron area).

Does anyone recommend towns very close to Akron with a good school district and New England charm? In terms of background, we would be relocating from the East Coast, both PhDs with a young child. We've lived in other parts of the country, mostly in the heart of downtown in major metro areas. Thanks for your help!

Although I'm not sure that it really has 'New England charm' (I've never been to New England), Cuyahoga Falls has a good school system from what I know. Safe area. I'm a fan of most of the CuyFalls neighborhoods west of Rt.8.
I'm sure others will chime in with good ideas

Thanks CityGrrl, that's more like a commute we can handle. We'll do more research on the town now that it's on our radar. Out of curiosity, we've heard good things about Highland Square. Is Highland Square in the Akron school district? We'd like to avoid Akron schools, if possible, primarily because they rate so poorly compared to other area school districts that rank in the excellent category. Thnx!

Yes, Highland Square is considered Akron. It's about a 5 minute drive from downtown. Although I cannot speak personally (I don't have kids), I know several people that live in the NW Akron area and give good reviews of King Elementary (on Memorial Pkwy) School Home and Case Elementary School Home
Both are in the Firestone Cluster and I personally think is in the best area(s) of Akron to live in.

As for Cuyahoga Falls, their schools are always rated pretty well. Cuyahoga Falls City School District

One more option you may want to look into is the city of Fairlawn. It's a safe, nice area with a lot of convenient shopping and freeway access. I believe the schools there are good as well. Copley-Fairlawn City Schools

Green is also a good area.

Hope this helps!

Hudson is where you want to live. I like Peninsula, too...especially if you want to be close to Cuyahoga Valley National Park with bike trails and skiing.

Default Drive time/cost-

7fields - what is the max commute time that you want from Cleveland and/or Akron?
Also, what price range are you looking at for either rentals/home ownership (if you don't mind giving a ballpark)?
Those 2 things will help to narrow it down even further.

(i.e. gentlearts mentioned Hudson above, but Hudson can be pretty expensive and will tack more time onto your drive to Akron for instance)

We're comfortable with a 20-25 min commute (currently have a 20 min walking commute in a downtown area, where rent runs 2k for a 1bdrm and 650-700k buys you a decent rowhouse, nothing too fancy). From what I've read so far, prices to rent or buy a home are much more reasonable in the Akron area, which frankly makes the area more appealing (in addition to virtual equidistance from family in NYC and Chicago).
