Highland square has some beautiful old residences and low crime. It's Akron Public schools, which aren't great (they're inner city after all) but since you homeschool it's a non issue. HS is a trendy area, lots of young singles so not necessarily the best place for kids, further west into West Akron or Fairlawn is better in that regard, but also more expensive. By Atlanta standards though you'll find prices reasonable.
