Hey everyone,

I will be joining university of Akron for grad school this fall. I am looking for an affordable apartment near campus. I won't probably have a car since I am an international student without a driving license in USA. I am on a tight budget. I need an one bedroom or a studio apartment (rent under $350 including all utilities) at a walking distance from the campus. I have browsed some apartments online but not sure if they are really as close to the campus as they say they are.

You'll probably have to browse newspaper classifieds for houses divided into apartments at that price point. All I can say is feel free to post potential addresses and we can give you some input as far as preference and proximity.

Good luck!

Yeah, for $350 a month and utilities included, your best bet is probably going to be to rent a bedroom in a home with other students. Varsity Rentals has some good prices on apartments, but the best I was ever able to find with utilities included was $420 a month, and that was an attic that had been turned into a studio apartment. Definitely be cautious and research any neighborhood that offers the price you're looking for. Without a car, there are a lot of areas around campus that you don't want to be stuck walking around. It will be safer and cheaper to live with fellow students.

Since the new stadium was built that area has been getting better. The university is buying up land left and right over there which has driven up the costs a little. Regardless, $350/month is doable but you need to careful where you buy. There are a lot of slum lords around campus so do your research.

The site has listing/message boards with housing openings near campus:

And here's a list of sites with more listings:
