Default College in Newton, Ala.

Wayne Flynt's book on Alabama Baptists calls it Newton Baptist Institute. He says that the local Baptists in Dale County created it in 1898 to serve the wiregrass region in providing high school level education. (The state did not yet have public high schools.) It was liquidated during the Depression.

It may have been called the Baptist Collegiate Institute. The University of Alabama has a book published in 1943 with the title: "The Baptist collegiate institute and its first principal" written y Elizabeth Lumpkin Barton. The first principal of that school was Augustus Walter Tate, born in 1861. A copy of the book is housed in the Hoole Special Collections Library with the call number T378 B285b 1943.
