Young Family On The Move
I am new here and looking for some local help. My family { wife and three children } are looking to move to north Al., some where around Lewis Smith Lake. I really need info on quality schools, small towns affordable housing {200K-250K } and available work. My wife is school teacher of 12 years in Florida, can she transfer her years of service and her teaching certificate? I own a landscape and lawn maintenance business and would be looking for work. If anyone could help I would greatly appreciate it.
Thanks,
Steve

Welcome to the Alabama State Department of Education
This should be a good start for your wife to do her research. Would you please share her findings with us? Thank you.

Sorry can't tell you a lot about Smith Lake except they are selling a lot of property there. Have you been there? Are you looking to live on Smith Lake or just to be near there for recreational purpose?
There are a lot of small towns around here. How far away from malls, movies and entertainment is acceptable? Most small towns don't have malls etc. There are a lot of dry counties and cities so if you like to go out for a drink or a beer now and then, that needs to be taken into consideration.
Lawn care business at least where I live seem to do well. It is often hard to get anyone who does landscape work unless it is a big job.
Give some ideas of what your requirements are and maybe we can help give you our humble opinion

Probably would be a good idea to look on the Walker Co. side (up just north of Jasper).

Giggle!!!! Keeper and humble opinion. Steel Magnolias do not come in humble:>) Duck and run >>>
You are right about the difficulty of finding a landscaper or even a yard man. The garden homes in my area have towel sized lawns and the gras cutting for most of three streets is in the hands of a resident. 75-125/mo for a fluffy job twice a month is a bit hefty. It takes him 30 minutes a yard including edging. Needless to say he picks up every odd job as well.

Keeper,
We wouldn't have to be on the lake at all, but I would like to be close enough to ride a bike to the lake. I guess 1/4 mile at most from a marina. Lawn and landscape maintenance is my profession and I would be pursuing work in the local area. How are the schools in tha area, we have 3 children in elementary and middle school.
This is for an earlier post my wife is researching the educational possibilities in the area. I appreciate the links it has helped greatly. There was no obvious requirements for a masters degree to teach in what we read, but I am not totally covinced of this yet, because the info. was fairly generic. I will post as soon as we know one way or the other.
Thanks

If you're looking to be close to a marina, I would suggest that you choose Duncan Bridge Marina. It's about 13 miles, give or take a few, from Jasper. If you were to live that close to the marina, Curry Elementary/Middle/High School would be the closest school for your children. There's also another school, if you were to choose somewhere a bit farther away from the Jasper area - Arley. If you were to go that route, then Meek High School would be the school of choice. If I were to choose, I'd rather have my children go to Curry. Here's a few websites to check out:
Curry Schools:
Curry Elementary School - Curry, Alabama
Curry Elementary School - Curry, Alabama
Curry High School - Curry, Alabama
Meek School:
Meek Elementary School
Meek High School
If you would like, you could PM me, I could give you more info.
