I am looking at moving to Millport, right across the MS state line in a couple of weeks. We are from Memphis. My family has been having great financial difficulties for the past several months, and my mother in law has offered to let us come there and give us a place to live. I am a city-girl at heart, but have lived in small towns - which were not great experiences - and I do not care for my 10 yr old son to live somewhere he will be an outsider. Myself, I do not care for the slow life of a small town and much prefer the diversity and culture of a larger place. I was born and raised in Dallas and Houston, hence my preferences. I am very, very unhappy about this move, and I am posting this in desperate hopes that SOMEBODY will respond to tell me something comforting about this move we're about to make. I can't hardly argue with someone giving my family a home when we can't pay for one now. My husband loves hunting and is a country boy, so he's just great with this move (not to mention, it's his mother - my family is here). I can't even discuss this with him hardly, because other than straight out accusing him of not even trying to find adequate work in our current area (which would probably cause a divorce or something & we've been together a long time, with a child at that), I don't have an argument against moving. I read on Greatschools.net that bullying was a problem at the South Lamar school. My son has always been shy and insecure, not to mention he's overweight, and I have no doubt he would be a target. School is 25 minutes from our home, too. I don't like any of this. PLEASE somebody help me feel better about this! I'm soooo sad!

I assume that Millport will just be a temporary home for you. I would encourage you or your husband to apply for jobs at the Paccar truck engine plant in Columbus, and at the Toyota plant just west of Tupelo. You can go online and find the Mississippi WIN job center, and that should help you find out how to apply. The Paccar plant is open but is ramping up, and the Toyota plant will probably open next year. Between those two industries, probably 2500 new jobs will be created in this area.

Millport is really closer to Columbus than any big city in Alabama, so you may want to cross post to the Mississippi forum.
