Thanks marmac. Days Inn was my other choice. I think I will book our last night in Fort Payne at the Fort Payne Inn and stay at the Days Inn the other nights.
Can't wait. I've wanted to go back since 1987. Lauri |

DougLauri - keep in mind that local residents work in those hotel chains and can provide lots of useful information. There is a nice Hampton Inn and Holiday Inn Express at exit 218, the southern Ft. Payne exit. They are next to the Ft. Payne Visitor's Center. Personally, I wouldn't stay at the Ft. Payne Inn; jmho, but I base this solely on curb appearance--who knows, it might be a great place to stay. Ft. Payne is a lovely place with friendly residents. I don't think you'll be disappointed. I hope you enjoy your stay! Also, I hope you have enough time to explore the area. If you do, be sure to visit the water falls, there are two of them! Be sure to have your camera!

My husband and I have our retirement home in Guntersville but have decided we need to get out and see the beauty surrounding us. A few weeks ago we went to the bottom of of the Canyon River Preserve and drove up to the top, stopping at all the pull offs along the way, so very beautiful (would be even better in Fall when leaves changing!). Then we went into town for lunch at little home town place, part restaurant/part antique store, was very nice. After lunch we decided to walk around town and were looking in the windows of a restored theater when a man pulled up and asked if we would like to see the inside. We took him up on it, he told us all about it's history, really nice fellow. We found everyone we met very nice and kind and it is really beautiful country, it will be a regular stop for us when we want a day trip.

OK OK I chickened out and booked all four nights at the RodeWay Inn. I will however, stop in at the Fort Payne Inn and ask questions and get a feel for the place. We only have a couple of days there and so much to do. Look at houses, check out local businesses we would use when we move, etc. I'm a foodie so of course we have to sample lots of the local fare.
Can't wait but I hate airplanes and airports. All part of the fun, right? Lauri |

Good choice, DougLauri, the Rodeway Inn is brand new, only been open a short while. It's near what we call the "North Y" and very close to some fast food and a grocery store. As a "foodie," be sure to head to Mentone and stop at the Wildflower Cafe, open 7 days a week for lunch, and Thurs, Fri & Sat for dinner. You WON'T be dissappointed! Great food and atmosphere! And, in "downtown Ft. Payne," be sure to eat at the Country Boys Cafe! Another terrific place to eat with great food, open for breakfast, lunch and dinner (till 7 pm)! There are some other places, but this will get you started! Have fun on your trip, don't let the airports and other travelling woes get to you!

All! The eatery recommendations are greatly appreciated. Just what I was hoping for. Wish we were going to have more tourist time. I noticed that the RodeWay was new. It also happened to be the best price with AAA.

I worked in Ft. Payne in the late 80's and early 90's, you could make a good living with the sock buisnesses, I contraced work from several companies,it is sad that so many companies moved to Mexico, and some companies closed down, renamed and hired mostly Mexicans,a lot of people lost thier jobs and livelyhoods. They still have Heil Enviramental. That is what makes small town living so hard. No work. Alotof drug activity too.

From watching the news the other day, the opinion is that some folks will drive to the VW plant in Chattanooga to work.
