I live in Dothan and I absolutley love it here! For a town of 67,000 it has a pretty big metro and an upscale urban-feel to it!

That is true however be sure you check to see what the Property tax is in TN vs AL. There is no income tax in FL but you pay a lot more in property tax

If you are retired you may not have to pay state income tax on your pension.

Default Nice Town to Raise a Family

I am from MS and my husband is from LA. I've lived in AL for 12 years (since our marriage) but he's been here since the early 80's. There are several nice "little" towns outside of B'ham. We bought our house 8 yrs. ago and were looking for alot of the same things as yaw'll. We had to be close enough to the B'am (because of my husband's job) but wanted acreage for horses, etc. We choose McCalla, AL (close to Tannehill State Park) All the lots in our subdivision are 3 acres plus. It's very quite, nice homes, lots of room. We have plenty of room for children to roam, garden spot, barn, pets and horses. I can be downtown (depending on traffic) in 30-45 minutes, same amount of time to the airport. Grocery store, movies,Target, ect is 10 minutes, churches close by, private and public schools close (not an issue for us because we homeschool) Another good area is Helena, AL. Very nice little town. Chelsea and Calera are also nice, but you would have to go I280 into B'ham for work, and the traffic is AWFUL. (lots of new growth in that area, but the roads are not equipped to handle it.) If you want to go north of the city, check out Springville. If we moved, it would probably be to there. Hope this helps. We feel we have been blessed with the best of both worlds, country life close enough to the "big" city but with a very quite, laid back place to call home.
P.S. With your price range for housing, you should be able to find what you're looking for
