I live in Auburn. Suggest the Shelton Park area of Auburn or try Opelika. There are some small but nice homes going up on the Opelika side of the airport. So many of the new subdivisions are very pricey even with the market like it is right now. Also, folks are renting homes they can't sell. You might check with your real estate agent for one of those or just check with the Opelika-Auburn Newspaper in the classifieds. Good luck!

Look at houses in Opelika and southeastern Lee county. This would put you geographically centered between the Auburn/Opelika and the Columbus/Phenix City areas. The commute is easy in both directions.

Auburn
Wow, Auburn. I would move to this town in a minute and leave Maryland in the dust...
I would check the Apartment Finder as most here have recommended and also Crossland Downs (I belive is the name). They have condos out by the Vet School (one of the best in the US by the way) and most are working residents, upper status grad students, etc. Sure you will have a few regular college students, but in a college town you have them all over. However this is far enough "out" that it is not walking distance to campus.
My daughter left Maryland 3 years ago to attend AU and is working on her PhD. She loves it, and only comes back here to visit. In fact, we are down in Auburn more than she comes north.
The people are so friendly (probably all over Alabama and the south), the city has not been run over by a metropolitan area, housing is very, very reasonable and you MUST visit **** of The Walk and Provinos for dinner!!
I sure do miss these places...
Now, where did I put my resume!!
Good luck in your move and you will love AU!
Mike

Auburn Home Rentals
I just relocated from Philadelphia (grew up in Detroit area, lived in Chicago, San Fran, S. Cal, Louisville, KY, all due to job moves). I work in West Point and live in Auburn. I searched EVERYWHERE from LaGrange, GA to Auburn, AL and everywhere inbetween. I settled on Auburn, AL. I too wanted a home to rent until I settled on a permanent area and got a feel for the town, area, etc. I have no children, so schools are not a consideration for me at this time. You can find rental homes in Auburn area from between $800 and $1000 a month. Generally speaking, that will get you a 3 br, 2ba single family home with about 1100 to 1500 sqft. Garages are not common in AL or GA, carports are more common. I must have looked at 30 to 50 homes in LaGrange, GA and Auburn, AL in particular. Here are a couple of links I found helpful:

I too did not want to be around a lot of college kids/noise, etc. I'm 46 and have "been there done that". Stay away from immediately around the campus. Also stay away from the S. College St. Walmart area duplexes--there are a TON of duplexes there that are filled with college kids/noise, congestion, etc. The single family home neighborhoods just a few blocks outside that area are very nice.
If you would like first hand information from someone who just went through that whole process, I'm more than happy to assist. Contact me at dswartz44@gmail.com. Good Luck! Dan.

Dan, thanks for the help. My wife and I ended up moving from Indiana, where I am originaly from, to Wisconsin and last November we moved to Houston for my job. We would still like to move to Alabama or South Carolina, especially Greenville,SC. Houston is very spread out and is huge, needless to say traffic is bad. We miss the small town feel, the town where we lived in Wisconsin had 3000 people.

Hi Dan, yes: thanks for your help! I just came across this post today, and it's been SUPER helpful! My husband and I are relocating to the Auburn area for school (he's recently been accepted to the Officer program for the Marine Corps) and we are considering buying when we get to Alabama, but we don't really know where to start.
We are both in our mid- to late-20's, with no children. We don't do the "party scene", and would prefer something in a family-friendly neighborhood. We don't have children, but we like being around them!
It seems like everything that is in our price range is in the La Grange area. Google tells me its 47-ish miles, but realistically, how far is that from Auburn University? We don't mind driving; we'd just like to know how far we will actually have to go if we do decide to settle on La Grange.
Thanks for your help! I'm going to go finish checking out the weblinks that you've provided!
Thanks, again!

LaGrange is 47 miles, another state and another time zone from Auburn, so be sure to factor that in. Auburn is not a big town. It is next door - literally - to Opelika, also a smallish town.
Auburn is a big university, so you will need to look carefully at neighborhoods to make sure the party college student element is not represented. Actually the farther away from AU, the quieter the neighborhood.
It will be a HUGE change from Hawaii, that's for sure! I don't know of any salsa-merengue type places to dance.

Good luck, and welcome to Alabama!

Auburn has a lot to offer. Very progressive city with a lot of job opportunities.
