Best places to live in the Shoals area?
Hi,
We are planning a trip from Calif. to visit to look into retirement property in Northern Alabama. Does anyone have suggestions for specific areas regarding the following?
We would like to be close enough to a city that has shopping, medical care, veterinary care, etc. but would prefer a rural setting to live in. We'd like to be able to get a house on at least a couple of acres. (We are not buying just yet, but want to see what's available.)
We have heard good things about affordable housing and cost of living there and are looking forward to visiting this fall.
Thank you!

Look around Athens, up the I-65 corridor towards Tennessee. Your medical care is, in order of size, Athens, Huntsville, and Birmingham. B'ham has some excellent world class medical facilites and doctors.

Florence has Eliza Coffey Hospital. Some beautiful countryside in that area. You might look between Athens and Florence, specifically the Rogersville and Killen areas. All the hospitals around here seem to have pretty good care. Huntsville has an excellent heart center. You're a couple of hours from Birmingham, which, as Harry said, is world class for medical care.

Thanks to you both for your replies! We look on the internet, but it is so much more helpful to hear from people that actually live there. You've given us good information, I appreciate it!

My hometown is Florence
I was raised in Florence, and after living away for over 13 years, came home to stay! It's not a very "exciting" place to live, but for me and my husband, it's perfect. We've lived in Chattanooga and Nashville, and hated the traffic and the crowds everywhere. So if you're looking for a quiet, safe, and beautiful place to spend your "golden years," PM me and give me your e-mail address, and I'll be happy to give you some more info.
