So, I live in south Florida and I want to go out of state for college. I really want to go to either Auburn University or University of Illinois in Chicago. My parents won't pay for me to go out of state so I have to move where ever I'm going to go and live there for a year so I can get in state tuition and pay for it myself. I just cannot decide where I want to go. Alabama is closer and I've heard Chicago is more expensive to live. But I really love Chicago. Any suggestions?

If you love Chicago, make it work there. Follow your heart!

What do you want to study? Auburn is a very good school in a lot of areas. As far as Chicago goes, having lived there, it is a great place to live as well To me, the key question boils down to what you want to study and what you can afford.

I'm sure you would enjoy either one.

If you go to Chicago, you will definitely end up spending more money. Rent will cost way more, and you will spend more money on entertainment, going out, eating, just because there is a ridiculous amount of things to do for a college student.

I would choose Auburn in a heartbeat, but of course I love Alabama and don't like big cities. Plus, I lived in Michigan for a year, and I never want to experience a midwestern winter again.

Why don't you go to Florida State? Compared to South Florida, it basically is out-of-state.

I cannot imagine putting up with Chicago weather extremes. The bigger question is "why are you going to college?" If it is with a particular career or job in line, then it isn't a question of location, but one of outplacement and reputation. A law degree from Harvard is a lot different than a law degree from Atlanta. There are also regional biases. That degree from Auburn might not get you as far in NYC as the one from Chicago.

If you aren't going to college with anything in mind, go cheap. College debt is a killer for many people, and keeps them in grunt jobs for years longer than if they hadn't gone at all.

Seriously, you need a good LONG talk with a guidance counselor.

This is good advice. Now, you need to go to a school with quality courses of study, but Auburn has that. And it's a pretty good deal.

I would check out FL colleges first especially if you are going to have to pay for it yourself. If after the first year or two you want to move then maybe you will have an idea of what you want to study and can make an informed decision.

The folks here are giving you some good advice..
