I'm going to be moving in a couple of weeks. As I am driving up the highway, I don't want to have to eat at Burger King or whatever is right beside the highway. I will have time to leave the highway at lunch time and drive into town to look for good little restaurants, serving local cuisines. I'm Leaving Ocala, Fl, up I-75, to I-10, up US 231 through Dothan to Montgomery. I-65 to Birmingham, and across to Tupelo on US 78 and on to Oxford on 6. Does this make sense. If you live in the area by where I will be driving, and know a wonderful little restaurant that has been serving local cuisine for a long time (Any one that suggests the panera's that just moved in, I will find you and shoot you.) Please tell me. I would love to come by for a visit. I was thinking alligator or whole crabs in Tallahassee, Racoon or possum in Dothan, Good Traditional Soul Food in Montgomery, Venision in Birmingham, Catfish in Tupelo. Help me out here, be creative, please. I want some history and culture with my food. If I don't get any satisfactory responses here I will just find a Subway sandwich shop or a Taco Bell.

Don't know about the other places, but there is a wide range of excellent restaurants in Birmingham. You'll need to check to make sure they serve lunch...most should. Go to birminghammenus dot com, which will give you a list of restaurants with links to their Web sites. Not sure if this is on their list, but Bright Star in Bessemer and Nikki's West, in north Birmingham, are 2 good lunch places. Both are in old neighborhoods, Nikki's really in a rough industrial area (no problems during the day, though). Bright Star leans toward Greek and is a 100-year-old establishment. Nikki's has cafeteria-style service with fresh local vegetables. Happy eatin'!

OK, Boar's Butt Barbecue should be on your way, right on 78 in Winfield.
And here's a link to a listing of the "100 Dishes to Eat In Alabama Before you Die." al.com: Everything Alabama . Or go to 800alabama dot com and find the list. Yum!

If you're going thru Oxford, please go by 'Top O the River' in Anniston, AL. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. Delicious fried fish, cornbread, slaw, greens, and fried dill pickles. They serve the corn bread, slaw, pickled onions while you're waiting for the main course. YUM, YUM!!! I looked up the address and phone number for you.....3330 McClellan Blvd, Anniston, AL
256-238-0097. I now live in Colorado but would almost make a trip to Alabama just to go to Top O the River! I believe they open around 4:00 PM but call to check. Happy Eating!!!!
