Default Big Cove, AL southeast of Huntsville on US 431

Big Cove, AL is about 10 miles southeast of Huntsville, AL on US 431. Not sure,
but much of Alabama in the early 1800's was Native American land; the Indian
Removal Act of 1830 forced the exile of more than 70,000 members of the Five
Civilized Tribes to Oklahoma on the infamous Trail of Tears.

Until about 1806 Madison County was claimed by both the Cherokee and Chickasaw as hunting grounds, but neither tribe maintained permanent settlements here. Before that, the Cherokees drove out the Shawnees in about 1721. The Cherokees sold the land to William Blount in 1783 (and over and over again to other land companies). The USA claimed the territory in 1806.

Of course, Spain, France, and England also claimed the territory in their turn.

From the late James Record's book "A Dream Come True: The History of Madison County".
