mj,

That's strange. Have you checked places like Costco and possibly even Wal-Mart?

I'm almost certain I've seen liquid chlorine in stores in Hsv before. What about the pool supply outlets?

I checked Walmart and my local pool store, I called a couple other ones too and one of the pool stores told me that you can't buy liquid chlorine in this state.... weird.

Weird indeed! I'd never heard that before. I suppose your next best option would be to order it via the net or another source. I know that can be a hassle.

If they don't sell it here to the consumer, I wonder what the folks who clean and service our pools use.

Pool chlorine is a little more than twice the strength of laundry chlorine. You can use that in a pinch. I have a friend in Texas that ran into the same restriction. Storage of large amounts of liquid chlorine or chlorine gas in metropolitan areas (pool supply stores and chemical depots) is becoming recognized as a risky thing to do.

I was curious as to whether or not there maybe some kind of health or environmental risk if it is not used in proper measurements.

I suppose that could cause some problems.

Nah. Chlorine is made by pumping electricity into salt water. That produces sodium hydroxide (washing soda) and chlorine from the salt (sodium chloride) and water. Give it time and it will revert back to salt water, which has a lower energy state.

If anything, chlorine is a friend of the environment, because when it reacts with pesticides and other nasty chemicals, it usually turns them into much more benign compounds. There are notable exceptions, but that is the rule.
