Hi, I currently live in Costa Rica and will be moving back to the states as soon as my house sells. I currently live on an acre right on the Caribbean Sea, about 10 miles from the nearest town. I've been reading a lot on the internet about Dothan. I would like to hear the negatives of about living there. I'm 66, single, and retired. So no kids in school, but I have lots of hobbies and four dogs (no pitbulls) that will be moving with me. Hurricanes and tornadoes are a big concern of mine because we don't have those here and they scare me. Do most houses have storm cellars? Thanks for helping in my research.

Hurricanes are no worse than Hurricade Ida that hit Costa Rica with just rain in 2009. Dothan is further from the coast than Costa Rica is wide. Dothan does not have any microclimates. It's standard south Alabama. According to Wikipedia, the per capita income is $20k and 21% of adults didn't complete high school.

Visit first. If you like it, rent, which will be hard with the four dogs.

I would recommend Mobile/Pensacola/Tallahassee if you want that area. Though I'm not sure exactly what you're looking for. Though if you're eventually buying, be aware of the tax difference between FL and AL.

Alledgedly, according to Wikipedia, less than 2% of Dothan is Hispanic. I find that odd for the south.

Why Dothan?

Disclaimer: I don't live there, but have driven through. Seems nice enough but too far from a big city for me.

I can say that Dothan is not a bad place to live. Compared to what I have now it is NYC. It is a small town but seems to have a lot going on and trying to move ahead. It is even hosting a USTA PRO tournament this week. It has a Botanical Garden and seems to be friendly and have enough people that are educated and forward thinking. The mayor is actively trying to get jobs for the area and seems forward thinking.

And it has several Publix, decent shopping center along with a Kohls, Target and the usual big box stores.

If there are no chicken processing plants, that's not surprising.

Check out Fairhope and the surrounding areas. Beautiful small town on a bluff over the bay. There are towns that are further inland that would also fit what you are looking for. I just love Fairhope. It is a very safe area with many folks not even locking there doors.

I too have only driven through Dothan and it seems nice enough. I have a friend who lived there and she liked it.

These sites should give you an idea what this charming town offers. We are close to Mobile and close to the beaches of the Gulf.We have farms a few minutes from downtown...believe me. You have the bay and land within 10 minute drive...Hope you come visit!!

Keep in mind the Wikipedia figures are coming from the census...which, despite their protestations, is not necessarily accurate.

True.

I'm sure all the illegals in Albertville aren't filling out their forms either.

I practically live in Dothan for one week of every month, for my job, and for NOW. It's a friendly place, and for a 66 year old, it'll do the job you want it to do. But it's not for everyone. It's a family friendly city, and nightlife is virtually non existent. It's conservative, but I'm seeing it to be an active place.

I've been an Alabamian almost my entire life, and it's just more Alabama. Personally, and this is just me, I'm all Alabama'd out. I need a change, as I live in Birmingham, but Dothan wouldn't be the change I was looking for. No city in Alabama would do the trick.
