I'm surprised about the entire thread bc I see so many mixed race marriages here in Birmingham....my daughter dated a mixed race boy this summer.

You have a better chance of getting in a car accident than getting in a "fight" over your choice for partners.

I will enjoy a Corona on the beach for all of you!

Good. Just remember, though, that not all of the south is the same. Atlanta is far more progressive then most of Alabama I would say. North Georgia has Lot's of outsiders who have moved there, -unlike much of the more rural and deep south. But still, while you might get looks, you are unlikely to have any serious problems. Yes, the south has changed a great deal, -just not all at the same pace.

I'm totally surprised by this thread. I've lived all over the United States, thanks to the military and there is racism everywhere. There is also acceptance, everywhere. The south does not have a monopoly on racism.
2 things...1 - there are a lot of mixed race marriages within the military - so I totally disagree with the post advising that you avoid military bases. Frankly that person is way uninformed in my opinion. 2 - Just because you are in Alabama, doesn't mean that the racism is more prevalent than somewhere else. Just enjoy your trip, people will look at you no matter your race, size, the clothing you are wearing, your partner...etc. I was happy to return to Alabma. At least, the people are more polite and friendly.

Pickles1 - maybe I didn't phrase it clearly enough - I said 'if you feel uncomfortable plan to stop' at military bases - implying that those would be the safest places for an interracial couple.

Threestep - I was responding to 'Pickles1' misunderstanding of my post (comment 7) on the first page of this thread. Since my comment was the only one that referred to military bases, Pickles1 must have been referring to that comment when he disagreed with 'avoid military bases'.
What I said was that military bases are safe (or might provide reassurance to a worried traveller in a strange land) for interracial couples, and I pointed out the two bases on the highway from ATL to PCB.
(1/?) ????????????

Just my $.02

Yes I'm glad my daughter has principles but because of her young age I worry she couldn't handle the negativity from her peers.
Especially since she is new to the area and is just making friends.
I worry more for her emotional well being right now.

I live in southeast AL with my non-white wife
We have been married 18 years. We lived in Andalusia(intersection of US 29 and US 84) when dating/married. We got A LOT of looks and stares back then but very little now. We moved to Dothan(end of US 431) in 2003. We have never had any comments or threats (to our face anyway). I am 6'3" and 290 lbs. LOL so I might be a little intimidating. The funny thing is we received more stares from blacks than whites. My wife is multi-racial and is not easily identifible racially. I thought she was native Hawaiian when we met. Most people assume she is black/mixed. She is actually Cherokee/Creek/Irish/Jew....quite possibly the only one in the world..lol. She was tormented in school in Alabama by blacks claiming her hair was not natural and she was trying to be white.(non of the white boys would ask here out--idiots!) She was called a ****** as a child by white teens in St Louis MO.....so yes there are racists and curious people all over...You will have no problems, enjoy your trip.
