Moving to the Sylacauga area...
My family and I are moving to the Sylacauga area very soon and would like to know if anyone could tell me anything about the area. My husband has been down there, only once, and I have not been at all. I have a 13 year old, this will be their first move, and would like to know about the school systems, crime rate, etc...really anything would be helpful...the average rent for a 3 br...i dont want to buy right now...would rather wait and see how this works out....
Thanks

It has been built up over the last three years. Not only Walmart and a seed store.

Just an impression from driving through, it seemed fairly isolated from Birmingham or Montgomery, or any activity. Nice countryside around it, and the 280 creep out of Birmingham may eventually get close enough to be significant.

They just opened a new hospital there. It's a nice town in a pretty area...that's about all I know about it...from driving through.

I love the older homes there and there's a decent looking traditional downtown (where everybody shopped before the big box stores on Hwy 280). I used to go through there about twice a month with my job and the basics are there and it appears vibrant if not wealthy. I would think that you could get good prices on rents there.

:>)))))Are we back to rumor 101? You forgot the monster under the bed.
It is a small town with a brand new hospital which brought some economic fresh air in form of development, stores, some newcomers, jobs ... If memory does not fail me there is even a rather decent antique dealer behind the main post office. Not the flea market kind.
I280 is four lane from Birmingham AL to Columbus GA. One major speed trap is Harpersville AL. Do not even think about speeding within the city limits. Tickets must be the major source of funding for Harpersville PD:>)
Welcome to Sylacauga, Alabama!

That's a bunch of bunk....as far as I know its a nice town. I saw an article in the Birmingham paper recently concerning how proud they were of their new hospital.
Sylacauga is only 25-30 minutes away from the outer fringes of the Birmingham metro...you will be able to drive into the Meadowbrook/Inverness area and find plenty of good shopping and restaurants if you can't find what you want in Sylacauga. Birmingham is 'growing toward' Sylacauga rapidly....
BTW - one of the finest golf courses in Alabama is located there and Alabama is loaded with fine golf courses....

I don't know where you live now but if you've lived in a small town and like it - I think you'll be fine there....

Sylacauga
My husband and I grew up in Sylacauga and our parents and siblings all still live there. It's a great little town if you're used to living in a small (southern) town. The schools are good, especially Sylacauga city schools (we both graduated from Sylacauga HS in 1982 and currently have lots of nieces and nephews of all ages in school there). I've never seen any reason to be overly concerned about crime there. Entertainment, cultural events, restaurants, shopping are relatively limited -- like any small town. Birmingham has plenty and is really a short drive away. The cost of homes has increased recently due to proximity to Birmingham (lots of people live in Sylacauga and commute to B'ham to work) but is relatively low compared to other places in the US. If anyone else in your family will be looking for a job, you might have some difficulty depending on what you're looking for. Overall it's a nice little town with lots of stuff going on for kids (baseball, soccer, football, cheerleading, gymnastics, etc....).
Good luck with the move!!
