Hello, we're seriously looking at relocating to the Tuscaloosa area at the end of the summer or early fall. Can anyone tell me what the best schools are for Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers in the area? Also, what are the best family and dog friendly neighborhoods on the south and southwest sides of Tuscaloosa? Thanks for your help!

I have several teacher friends that are employed with in the city schools, It seems the Hillcrest area/Hwy 69 S is a good locale for living and schooling.

On the County side, I can speak for Tuscaloosa County High School. My boys graduated there, one just this May. I grauadted there as did several generations of my family...They have a new facility, wonderful teachers.

Hope this gives you a starting point.

Many people opt for Northport. Northport High is a well-ranked school, and the city offers luxury subdivisions. Some of the retail businesses that were destroyed in the 2011 tornadoes have relocated to Northport.

Northport High School is actually Tuscaloosa County High school. It is true that Hobby Lobby and Big Lots have relocated from Tuscsaloosa to Northport.

The Hillcrest area may fit the bill for what you are looking for. Good schools, nice neighborhoods but ewwww, traffic on Hwy69 South really stinks during the rush hours.

I'm sorry, it's not Northport, it's Northside High School. Northside High School / Homepage, 19230 Northside Highway, Northport AL 35475
Tuscaloosa County High: Tuscaloosa County High School / Homepage 12500 Wildcat Drive, Northport AL 35475
I'm confused. Aren't these separate high schools?

Other high schools in the system are Hillcrest High, Holt High, Sipsey Valley High, and Brookwood High.

Tuscaloosa city has its own school system. Tuscaloosa also has a number of private schools.

Yes, those are separate schools. I had forgotten about Northside. I don't get up that way too much. It's in a nice rural setting and is a good bit smaller than County High, Northside is near the community of Samantha.

Yeah, Northside isn't too far from where I grew up. The community is bigger than it used to be, as they have a gas station and a Dollar General now. Not an academic powerhouse, but it's a nice, little place.
