I am looking at Mobile for the water, Montgomery to be close to family, or Tuscaloosa to be close to family.... which is overall best area? I am really interested in Mobile for the water... and like it the best so far.

Mobile is a great place to live. I got to live there for 2 years while i was in the military. But for me, the best place to live in Alabama is actually just south east of Montgomery, closer to the Troy, Ozark, Enterprise, Geneva, Dothan area. This has been home for me for about 20 years, and there is no place as friendly or as warm (both people and temperatures) as the wiregrass.

You need to clarify what you consider best.

Mobile is a beautiful city however there is a lot of crime there now a days. Mobile is my hometown and I love it but it is so different now. If you are thinking about Mobile what about Daphne, Spanish Fort or Fairhope on the other side of the bay. Great place to live and much safer. Fairhope is a beautiful town and very safe. There are a lot of artist types there and the city is built on a bluff overlooking the bay.

You would be 3 hours to Montgomery not sure how far it is to Tuscaloosa but probably more like 4 hours.

Mobile is great. Love to visit.
Lots and lots of places in Alabama have water nearby, especially if you want to have a boat. Plenty of lakes and rivers.
