Default I'm ready to move...out.

I know this discussion is kind of old but I just have to say something.... I moved to Arab 2 years ago. I am white and I still have not been excepted because I am not "from here". I am ready to move! It's a real rarity to actually see an African American in this town. My son came home one day after school and asked me why there aren't any black kids at school and he was 8 years old and could tell. I am a very sociable person. When we lived in south Alabama my husband would send me to the store 10 minutes away and I would be gone for at least an hour because I would always run into people and have to stop and chat with them but that hasn't happened here in the whole 2 years we have been here. Now I am not going to say I haven't met any nice people because there are some but I seem to have met many more that just aren't. I have another relative that has moved here too and she has never felt comfortable here or excepted either. Now on the nicer side.... Arab is a nice clean town with good schools. They do have a beautiful Christmas display of lights at the park every year that I will miss.
Oh, and they a lot of really bad drivers here too.

In most communities it takes some time for acceptance of an outsider no matter whether they are white anglo saxons or other people. I when I moved to a new town the locals said it may take up to 40 years to be fully accepted as a local.

I am sorry to hear about your experience. I have lived here 2 years and I haven't had any problems making friends. Since I moved here from FL where ppl were not friendly at all, I have ppl in the stores very friendly.

Maybe we could start a newcomer's club here. Have lunch once a month, get together.

I've lived in Arab for 1 1/2 years and we love it here. It is a nice, clean small town. Quiet and I've found that folks are as nice to you as you are to them. It is located close enough to Birmingham and Huntsville to take advantage of what the city offers, but it still has that wonderful small country feel. Lots of beautiful places in this area.

Have you listened to the 'world famous' Helping hand on the radio here? I always chuckle when I hear them say that it is 'world famous'. For those who have missed it, it is a call in radio show 'for sale items' etc. Anything from fresh eggs to cars.

I too have ppl to be very friendly here. Men and boys tip their hats to women, kids are polite and I have gotten to know several ppl just from chatting at Wally World.

We have a radio show like that here in the Atmore-Flomaton area too. We call it the "swap shop" lol.

notime362 will become famous soon enough
I'm not a resident of Arab, but let me interject my story. My home is For Sale in Sebastian, Floiridumb. I have visited Marshall County over both the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holidays. I have spent a week in Arab (Jameson Inn), and visited the stores and restaurants there. Like Keeper said, I too have seen Mixed couples at both places there, and No Problem!! I talked to a Lt. on The Arab PD at Wal-Mart for almost 30 minutes about the racial problems. I had to know, because my daughter is in a Mixed marriage, and I wanted no problems when they visited. Again - No Problem!!! Arab is a great town, having almost everything you want. If they don't, Huntsville is 30 minutes away. I have found my niche in Albertville/Boaz, but that's only 15 minutes away. The people are great, compared to the '"Tribe" we have in Floridumb. I only see goodness - lower taxes, insurance, housing prices, and people who aren't plastic. Hope I helped... Listen to Keeper - She won't steer you wrong.

The 40 year comment was from someone who doesn't even live in the US let alone Alabama.
No city/town is right for everyone, all you have to do is read this forum.

Have you considered any of the Alabama towns that border Florida? Brewton, Andalusia, Opp, and Enterprise are all quiet towns with plenty of rural surrounding them.
