Considering job in Montgomery, I'm male in mid 20's. I've spent a lot of time for work in Jackson, MS and Birmingham and live in Memphis. How does Montgomery compare to these places in terms of things to do, city living, etc.

Ummm....not even a blip.

Memphis? Lots to do.
Birmingham? Lots to do.
Montgomery? Crickets.

Seriously. I had a long-term client gig that entailed my spending one night a week in Montgomery. I tried desperately to find things to do. Anything. There's the Shakespeare Festival for sure. But after that, the entertainment options quickly slide downhill.

It says a lot when the local entertainment columnist in the Montgomery Advertiser wrote a column about how they would never come close to Birmingham in terms of entertainment.

I'm sure it's no worse than Jackson though.

Is Atlanta an option?

I'll agree that the closest comparison is Jackson. Capitol cities with nightlife that caters to the politico crowd, and then older money that does what it does.

Aren't there a few bars in the old Cloverdale neighborhood and a few more downtown?

Yes. There are good bars in Cloverdale, downtown, and elsewhere. Montgomery is a city of ~300k people. It's not Dodge City. There is no shortage of restaurants and bars. There are people out and about and doing stuff. Live music, sports, some theater, etc etc...

It's not Manhattan. But for someone who can get along in Jackson MS I'm sure it will be fine.

Listen, you're just dealing with very small cities when you start talking about nightlife in MOntgomery and Jackson. They might be the capital cities for their respective states, but we are talking about Alabama and Mississippi here. And to be honest, lots of US capital cities are pretty dullsville. To me, Charlotte is more entertaining than Raleigh, for instance. Can Sacramento compare to San Francisco? What about Tallahassee to Miami? Carson City to Las Vegas? Except here, you are dealing with Alabama and Mississippi.

If I were single and in my mid 20's (both of which lasted for about 15 minutes), I'd keep looking for a better place to settle. Consider Atlanta, Nashville, or Orlando.

This post.

I'm not sure about Orlando though but yeah, it's still better then Jackson or Montgomery.
