No. Hockey is not popular in Alabama, as a whole.

That doesn't mean there aren't any hockey fans in the state, but the generalized answer to your generalized question is a firm "No".

There is a minor-league hockey team in Huntsville, and the Univ of Alabama-Huntsville has a hockey team as well, but I don't know what kind of following they get. They certainly don't get much at all (if any) outside the Huntsville area.

In all seriousness, it's just not. It's a club sport at UA still, I think. But aside from Huntsville, there isn't much interest. Birmingham has one ice rink in Pelham, and the powers that be in that town keep trying to find a way to sell it or shut it down.

IIRC there are five ice rinks in the entire state - with 2 of those in Huntsville and 1 in Decatur.

The UAH Hockey team was almost shut down last year and the team is looking for a NCAA conference. The Havoc average ~3500 attendees per game, which is more than the league average.
