My husband is working in the Gulf of Mexico and is based out of Picayune, MS. He works 1 week on/1 week off. We are currently in Houston. We have an 18 year old son who is disabled and currently attends the local college. I have a younger boy as well. We need to meet the following criteria for our move and I honestly don't know where to start:

1. Good medical for our son.
2. Reputable college that my son can attend.
3. Clean air (we have breathing issues)
4. Good public schools for our younger boy
5. Lots of employment opportunities for me (I'm a therapist)
6. Not too far from Mississippi (less than 6 hour drive)
7. Smaller city than Houston with a low crime rate
8. Affordable housing
9. A community that feels like a "community"
10. Outdoor activities close by such as hiking, fishing, camping...........

We plan on taking our Thanksgiving holiday to drive around Alabama and check things out. Could someone please let us know what area (s) might fit these needs? Thanks for all of your responses!!

Well, the Eastern shore of Mobile Bay sounds ideal.

True, and Faulkner State is a pretty good school. Three big hospitals in Mobile, and if you don't like those there's three more in Pensacola. There's also plenty of folks down this way that work out in the gulf.

Univ. of S. Alabama in Mobile is strong in certain fields as well.

U of South Alabama in Mobile has a medical school and a highly rated physical therapy program. Mobile also has other colleges - Spring Hill College, U of Mobile - both private, plus Bishop State Community College.
The only hitch in Mobile might be public schools - many prefer to go to private schools.
However, Spanish Fort and Daphne (just east of Mobile) have, I hear, excellent public schools.

Mobile has many great public schools. Particularly if you live in west Mobile or midtown.

It's also going to have more jobs and more colleges. Give both areas a fair shot.
