for those interested in the Dog Days flea market I found some info here
Dog Days Flea Market - Ardmore

Does anyone know of a good flea market closer to Birmingham that would be good for finding decent furniture/antiques?

Not a flea market, but along Main Street in the old town section of Hartselle are a bunch of antique shops, and it's an easy drive up 65 from Birmingham (exit 328). You will find few or no "deals" there, though, they are retail establishments. On the other hand, all the restoration and such has been done for you.

If you do go, caveat emptor. Even to my untrained eye, it was obvious that about half of the "antiques" were reproductions, and were not labeled as such and priced as the real thing. I've since had that judgment confirmed by more knowledgeable folks.

Still, if you like that sort of thing it's a relaxing way to spend a Saturday afternoon.

20 miles south of the Hartselle exit is the Cullman Flea Market (exit 308 off I-65). I haven't been, but I've heard about it plenty.
