Tell us what you are looking for GA boy.. as far as work, home and play?
Each area has something that might appeal to you. Mountains in the North and beach in South.

This is why it's better to tell people the south is horrible, and that they shouldn't move here. Uh...nooooo! Run for your lives! There are...um...big spiders, and roving bands of dog-shavers!
Heh. Not really.

Yep. It's the next big trend.
Seriously, I think a lot of us don't mind the anti-southern (esp. anti-Alabama) stereotypes, if they keep crowds away and real estate prices down. Maybe it doesn't work that way, though...
Then again, I heard rumors that a lot of people in the VA/DC area were giving up their jobs rather than be BRAC'ed to Huntsville. People in Huntsville who heard about this were gleeful--more jobs for them!

FlourChild - your comment reminds me to drink deep. We've all heard Heywood's "the more the merrier", but the rest of the saying is "the fewer the better fare"

GaBoy, look in the northwestern corner of the state too. The small towns surrounding Florence/Muscle Schoals should be very family oriented. I have been to Red Bay before and was very impressed.

True, that. My inlaws live in Lexington, which is rural (almost at the TN state line). They have some acreage and keep beef cattle (as opposed to dairy cattle). Pretty country around there, really.

Well, then, a lot of those jobs will have to be filled by people from someplace other than DC. There are not enough qualified, unemployed people in Huntsville to fill very many of them.

I grew up in Athens, in Limestone County, and it is a great place to live, especially the east side.
Even the so called 'worst' elementary school is above average, and AHS is considered about an 8/10 school from a lot of sources I have read.
It is only a small commute to Huntsville and certainly allows for a much slower, small town type of environment. Whether you want to hunt, fish, go boating, or play golf, Athens is a great place.
Real estate there is pretty cheap, too. You can build a brand new house at Canebrake for around $110 a square foot the last time I checked, and of course the older houses are even less per square foot. There is a beautiful ante-bellum district that occasionally has houses for sale if you would like an older house.
If you have children that like to play sports, AHS is also a good school. It produces about one or two players for the SEC in football every year, and usually sends a few kids to colleges on golf, baseball, and basketball scholarships. High school football is a big deal, the stadium could probably fill the entire town if need be.
If you have any more questions about Athens or Limestone County in general, PM me.

Um...ever heard of changing jobs? If the BRAC stuff pays well enough, people will leave their existing employers--IN HUNTSVILLE--to take them. Happens all the time. As for "qualified", you must not know much about Huntsville. Quite a few Ph.Ds and experienced engineers/programmers in Huntsville.
