From New York City to Haleyville, Ala.? Oh my. Friend, I do hope you go visit before you make the move. Haleyville is a tiny town in northwest Alabama. It has a 2-screen movie theater (if it's still operating). The county is dry...meaning no liquor, no wine, no beer sold. The nearest big town would be the Florence/Muscle Shoals/Tuscumbia/Sheffield area...or Birmingham. You, my friend, are in for MAJOR culture shock!

Yes, I would visit before making the decision...its a tiny town.
Alabama has some very good hospitals in its urban areas so if you are trying to get out of NY, you could contact some of them....

What makes you consider a move to AL? Would you mind to share a bit about you - what position (in general) are you interviewing for. What do you do for fun? Do you have any special requirements? How would your family in NY handle your potential move?

On the other hand...Haleyville will probably welcome you eagerly; they are in dire need of local doctors. It is very close to the Bankhead National Forest and some lovely hiking (especially in the fall!). It's also close to Smith Lake if you enjoy boating. You may find it your little piece of paradise!

I moved to Double Springs from Florida when I was 18. I was warned about everything. My parents came up here two years earlier and was actually on a party line. So you can imagine the shock it was for all of us to adapt. I was home sick for years. It is kinda scary thinking I might have become one of them (country people), but at the same time it's also reassuring to know I feel safe living in a small town, and my neighbors look out for one another. A little bit more drama but a lot less crime.

I moved to Haleyville back in August from a small town 20 miles south of Albany, NY. I have to say that I love the area and the people here, but it has been a major adjustment.
It's been hard to get used to the fact that I have to drive so far to get to the malls and restaurants. What money I would save on gas is spent on commuting.
Employment and wages in this area was another shock! They say the cost of living is less (although upon visiting a grocery store you wouldn't think so!) but I'm finding that the only thing cheaper here than in upstate NY is rent and gasoline.
If it sounds like I'm complaining, I'm really not. I wouldn't give up the life I am making for myself here for anything. I'm sure once you visit and meet the people you will love it here! Just be prepared for quite a change and I wish you the best of luck!

Docm,
You are in for a big change, just as I would have endure were I forced to move to NYC.
It is a small Southern town, but like anything else, it will be what you make of it. Don't drop in trying to change things, the people there have been there for generations.
They'll be good to you if you are good to them.
