Chekc out my blog, Three Rivers Recon. I write it for relocators to the Montgomery area (Montgomery, Prattville, Pike Road, etc.) who need to know more about neighborhoods, schools, and activities here. If you have a question I have not answered in a post, let me know and I'll do my best to find the answer for you.
Like someone already said, because of the military presence in Montgomery, there is a lot to rent here in the River Region. If school-age kids are a factor, then find a school first and let that choice determine where you rent.

There are a bunch of interracial military families in Montgomery. Most of them live in Prattville and haven't had any problems. I am not familiar with the area your friend moved.

You might could also look in the surrounding areas of Montgomery. Millbrook, Prattville, Wetumpka - all of those would be good choices. Prattville is growing like a weed, while Millbrook & Wetumpka are still has a "small town atmosphere". Good luck in your search. Sorry I don't have anything further on the housing for you.

Prattville--not for me--
I lived about 1-1/2 years in Prattville, after moving from Montgomery where I had lived about 20 years. While I'm sure there are a lot of very nice people there and the home costs are attractive for a lot of people, I didn't care for it. I was stopped by police 3 times. I'm a grandmother and at the time had a baby seat in the back of my 4-cylinder Jetta. I stopped to rest, get a cold drink, and catch my breath in front of a quick stop food store after walking at a local park and within 10 minutes, 2 police cars were either side of my car and asking me for ID and questioning why I was just "sitting there." I wanted to ask if I looked like Bonnie and did my little 10-year-old Jetta look like a getaway car. Another time I was at another public park, sitting in my car, having lunch, and a policeman asked to me move (read, go home, lady) because there were soccer games scheduled. The last time I had a new camera and was walking around town on a Saturday afternoon taking pictures of local landmarks and just happened to be standing in the parking lot of a downtown church when a policeman stopped and asked what my business there was. Since it was not Sunday and there were no church-related events going on, technically, I was trespassing, it seemed. I had done that in Savannah and also in my much smaller hometown of Opelika before with no incident.
Prattville, for the most part and in my opinion, is populated by military and rednecks. Wetumpka has a lot of potential, but again, a lot of rednecks. I was given the bird and yelled at in Elmore County when I was looking for an estate sale and driving too slowly obviously--by a woman, no less. Personally, had a negative experience at the Elmore County Courthouse, also, but won't bore you with that story.
Montgomery has charming old neighborhoods in Old Cloverdale and Capitol Heights.
All in all, I'm glad to be back home in the Opelika-Auburn area. There are certainly rednecks here, also--just not as many and they are much more polite. Traffic problems are nonexistent here.
