Clay County, Cragford??
Does anyone know this area? If not, is there a Country-Data Forum? We can't move right now but are looking for an area with low taxes, a place where we can have horses on at least 10 acres but would like more, AWAY from any big city, away from the coast, and prefer a house over a mobile home. And does anyone know if they are making Mobile homes any safer now to live in-nevermind, I think I want a house with a basement.:-)

If you like the rural life, you would probably find what you are looking for in Clay County, AL. As an added bonus, it's situated between Atlanta and Birmingham if you feel the occasional urge for the city life.
About mobile homes or taxes.....I don't have a clue, but I do know property is super cheap, and the people are some of the nicest folks I've ever met. I feel sure you would be welcome there.

Thanks, Jellybean....
I can't wait till my husband and I can start looking for our next home!! My horses can't wait either! Do you know anything about hay in that area? I know you don't get much snow but don't know if you have to "put up" hay for the winter. I have always lived in a house, but asked about mobiles because of the taxes in Florida. I did a search on homes and found out they now make "manufactured homes" and they are safer than mobile homes. If we stay in Florida, we might consider one of those to save $$$. I've seen some with log siding that actually look like a log home! Add a metal roof, a wrap-around deck and a fireplace, and you have my dream home!!

Another thing to know about Clay County is that if you want a decent sized town with something more than a run-down piggly wiggly youll have to travel more than an hour. I dont know if its important to you, but clay county is a dry county. Mobile homes? there everywhere in alabama

I rode through several years ago with relatives, and found it to be very pretty, friendly and inviting. Lots of little Churches accross the country side. Probably most of the focus of the community, id guess. At any rate, It looked like any horse or person would be happy there. As for the need to get some "City Lights" every now and again, Birmingham is there, but its really not so far that you couldnt easily go to Atlanta for the weekend. I didnt notice much about the shopping, but with all the fine cooks in the Alabama, Georgia country side, they must be getting it somewhere. I have never eaten such good/home cooked/ generous amounts of food in my life. Good times. By the way, this is the Real South, If you ask politely, in a civil friendly way, folks will most likely tell you where the best shopping spots are, as well as vets, ferriers, feedstores, etc. They are usually very happy to be of service to a neighbor. (and any stranger who makes any effort to be pleasant)

We are going to go check it out in a couple weeks! I hope we're not too late for the fall leaves. Sounds like my kind of place. Piggly Wiggly, no problem. We shop at Wally world, too. (Walmart) My son lives north of Atlanta so that will be cool that we could visit him more often. I used to live in North Florida so I know what you mean about country people helping their neighbors. Where I live now, (South Fla.), your neighbors look at you funny if you step on their property! I want out of here SO bad. Plus I can't afford any acreage for my horses here. I just want to see them out in a REAL pasture, if you know what I mean. But we might have to make a "trip" into the city every now and then for some Starbucks!!
