I don't know anything about Hokes Bluff...Alexander City is a nice town, located on Lake Martin - probably the most popular lake in Alabama. Lake Martin has thousands of homes located on its shores with most owners being from Birmingham and Montgomery. The homes on the lake itself are expensive.

Alexander City is on highway 280 - a four lane road that runs from Columbus GA and terminates in Birmingham. It has a good hospital and pretty good schools also. If you chose to live in town or close to town (but not on the lake itself) I am sure you could find affordable housing.

You can get more info here on all cities in AL.. This one has Hokes Bluff listed, for Alexander City check out the larger cities over 6,000
Alabama Smaller Cities, Towns, and Villages (between 1000 and 6000 residents). You will find most cities listed there and some even have pictures of their area.

I am not defending what happened in Arab years go and there have been a lot of post regarding Arab's diversity but I can only tell you why I moved here from Tampa. My daughter moved up here first and wanted me near her since I lived alone in Tpa she worried about my safety. I feel safe in my home here and don't need an alarm system anymore like I did in Tampa. I love the large tree'd lots and friendly neighbors, ppl speaking to you even though you are a stranger. Arab has a small downtown which is struggling, but they are trying to make improvements and more stores are opening.
The schools are rated in the top 5 in AL, out of 200 students over 1/2 received college scholarships last year.
Yes, Arab is mostly a white city, as are many others in N. AL.
Take a look at the diversity of the cities you are interested in and you can judge for yourself.
Check out Valleymls.com for homes all over N. AL..
Check out some of the photos in the annoucement section of this forum to get an idea of different areas.
