zenjenn - off topic - if you haven't been to the Botanical Garden yet, go and take the kids tomorrow! The scarecrows will be coming down after Halloween.
On topic, one of the benefits of living in a smaller state is that you actually get to 'know' your politicians. Plus there's the free BBQ and fish fry's (but I don't know if catfish is kosher - I'm pretty sure pork is not
BTW, Madison County Sheriff Blake Dorning (R) grills the best chicken...

Oh! I should check it out. I've avoided it because my strollers are still in storage and I thought it might be too much to drag my 2-yr-old around there without a stroller. Is there a lot of walking?
And no, catfish is generally not kosher. (Not that I completely keep kosher (yet), but I do avoid eating non-kosher animals) There is some certain kind of catfish that is kosher but it's rare I think and certainly wouldn't be at the fish frys. (It has to do with the fish having a kind of scale that can be easily removed. I'm no expert.)

Tons of walking, but also lots of places to stop and rest and they have a garden/play section just for kids, but your toddler probably isn't old enough to appreciate it yet.
The Galaxy of lights goes up in November, and they have drive-through nights after Thanksgiving.

zenjenn - fortunately yes, there is a lot of walking. Or not. The children's area is fairly close to the entrance. The garden has free wagons for toddlers and volunteer-driven carts (usually handicap and elderly).
Back on topic: 'issues'. The Bham News Brett Blackledge won a Pulitzer Prize this year for reporting on the corruption in the two-year college system. Note that Alabama's legislature is part-time. Blackledge also reported that something like 40% of legislators (all but one of them a Democrat) work for the two-year system. IMO the jobs appear to be 'no work' jobs, such as 'legislative liaison' and 'government affairs'.

These people are also under federal investigation now. I predict many of them will be removed from office, Republicans will take their place and finally get control of the legislature. We will then see tremendous progress in Montgomery....
