I'd like to come to Alabama for about a month or two in the summer and just live there just for the experience. I'm not looking for a big city, but rather something small and homely. You know, where everyone knowns the local diner waitress? That type of deal. Any suggestions on where to start looking?

Default Just what you're looking for....

I grew up in a very small town in west-central Alabama and swore I'd never want to live in a small town again, but about 8 years ago, I found a town that made me change my mind. I bought a home on Logan Martin Lake in Pell City, AL, and found the exact sort of experience you mentioned. My first weekend here, I had breakfast at a little cafe called "The Kitchen" ("Rita's Kitchen at the time), and loved the small-town atmosphere. Almost every person who entered was greeted by their first name... one patron leaned back in his chair, looking into the kitchen and spoke directly to the cook, calling her by name and asking her to cook his eggs "over easy". As the waitress poured coffee, she asked another patron, "Has your sister had that baby yet?..." I did not know any of these folks, but I immediately felt at home.

The cost of living here is unbelievably low, and it's convenient to most everything. From "downtown" Pell City, you're just a couple of miles from beautiful Logan Martin Lake, 45 minutes from Cheaha State Park, one hour from Birmingham, AL, 2 hrs from Atlanta, GA, and about 4.5 hrs from the beautiful Gulf Coast.

Here's a few links for more info on the area:
