This is going to have a HUGE effect in NW Alabama.

International Paper, the largest employer in Lawrence County, will close its Courtland plant by early next year, leaving 1,100 workers jobless, the company announced today.

The decision to close International Paper, a paper mill built in 1971 with an annual production capacity of 950,000 tons, was finalized Tuesday afternoon during a board of directors meeting. The mill will be shut down in stages, with full closure expected by the end of the first quarter of 2014.

In addition to the workers at the plant, there are loggers all over the area that will be jobless. I'm stunned that the Ticonderoga plant in NY wasn't closed first.

So true. My brother has worked there for 21+ years. He says about 3/4 of the employees live in the Florence area, with about 1/4 in Lawrence and Morgan counties...I'm sure there are some in Limestone and even Tennessee.
There are many, many retirees in the area.

Default internationalpaper to close Courtland plant

Yes, this will have a serious impac t on a wide area. Would be interesting to know whether this has something soley to do with this particular plant or is just about the general scaling back od the American economy.

I can sense that there is at least some validity to the stated cause. The pace at which books are turning into eBooks is increasing, the junk mail in my mailbox has all but disappeared, and many transactions I make are paperless.

IP was late to adopt to the ways of the paperless and digital communications, but they weren't slow to abuse the tax abatements and incentives for their Memphis office expansion lol...the fools in Memphis made too many concessions.

IP is not building more plants outside the US, like in south America and in China...

Serves them right

the only industry that dumber than the folks in this commodity of paper, pulp and lumber are the fools working in the automotive tire business such as Goodyear, Cooper and Michelin. You gotta know your manufacturing jobs are going elsewhere, near raw materials and lower labor costs and NO unions. You couldn't pay me to be in those industries unless I was 2 years away from hitting the bricks.

IP cold-cocked these people - just like Goodyear has done and will do more of
