Default Interracial couple thinking about relocating to Greenville

My husband and I are a young interracial couple (I’m black & he’s white) from NJ that’s looking to settle down in the South and start our family. The other night we were watch Sweet Home Alabama with Reese Witherspoon and feel in love with Greenville where the film was shot. I wanted a little information on the area. As far as real estate, jobs, ect

I’m in the field of Criminal Justice are there other jobs minus being a police officer in the area? My husband works for Verizon as a technician, is the home phone service through Verizon or Bell South down there? The reason I ask is because we would have to move to an area that uses Verizon in order for him to be able to transfer.
Also does anyone what the real estate is like? Ideally we would like to stay in the 250k-350k range

Thanks in Advance

First and foremost, Sweet Home AL was filmed in GA not AL.
Secondly, BellSouth is in S. AL. Verizon is in N. AL.

If you are considering moving south because of a movie, you will be disappointed. Don't get me wrong I loved the movie too and the south is a wonderful place to live.

You need to come down for a visit to check out the areas.

a) Verizon will be able to answer your question especially as your husband works for them.
b) Hollywood and reality are two cups of tea.
c) Why do you want to move South? What do you expect from it?
d) Why do you point out that you are an interracial couple?

Have you considered taking vacation to explore the South?

Depending on where in Bama you move to, you and hubby may get more grief than you want. Grief from blacks and whites.Prejudice in the south runs both ways. though i do believe it has eased up a little since the George Wallace days. You must have a darn good reason for wanting to move to Bama, cause i cant think of a worse place for a mixed race couple to start a family. Good luck!

More than likely, he would have to find a new job because AT@T (BellSouth) is the dominant phone provider in the Southeast, and particularly AL. And having a interracial parental unit, I would urge you to rethink Greenville. I lived in Hoover and Mountain Brook and my parents still got grief.

I pointed out that we are a interracial couple for numerous reasons but lets be honest look what just happened in Jena. I don't want to go somewhere to try to raise a family and be unhappy.

I'm not moving to the South because of the movie. Yes I love the movie and all but I used it as an example. I would love to move to a small town with great Southern charm. I'm a Northern girl but I want to raise my children in the South just for different reasons.

I love NJ but realistically its impossbile to own a home in Northern NJ homes start around 475k and some condos are going for over 500k. theres no such things as 250k in NJ.

You should look in Huntsville. It is a very diverse area mainly because of the military here. While I don't think you would have problems in every small town in AL. the smaller the town the harder it is to break through because most ppl have known each other for years no matter what color you are.
Huntsville has a new verizon call center that just opened in Huntsville. You can get a really nice big home for the money you are looking to spend.
