Possibly relocating from Detroit to Lincoln, AL
Mornin'!!! My husband just told me a about a possible job offer in Lincoln, AL. We currently live in Detroit and I do not know much about that area or AL for that matter. We have 2 small children that wont be starting school for a few years but if you move I want to make sure it is to a good school district... any advise? I am going to school currently for nursing and would need to find a college or university to transfer to. Are there any good colleges in that area I could look into? This would be a big move for us seeing as we would be leaving all our family and friends here. We do not know anyone there to give us the ins and outs. Any advise is greatly appreciated. ~ Meg

As far as nursing is concerned - it does not get much better then UAB and Samford.
Little people - I cannot help you with.

Meg, we have had several inquiries from folks in similar situations, so you might want to search this forum. Some have gone to the Anniston area, some to Talladega, some to the eastern suburbs of Birmingham. Depending on where you settle, you could go to Jacksonville State University, UAB (probably the top school for nurses), Samford, or others for a 4-year degree, plus Alabama has a number of junior colleges for 2-year degrees. Best of luck to you!

I'd take the job with Honda and don't look back. They are a roaring success...
Lincoln is located in Talladega County which from a management and education standpoint leaves quite a bit to be desired.
If I were you, I would live in the Eastern suburbs of Birmingham (in St. Clair County)....good schools there and the commute to the plant would be about 25 minutes or so. It is right on I-20.
UAB has one of the most respected medical/dental and nursing programs in the United States. A degree from there would be recognized and appreciated by any hospital. Your commute in the other direction - west - would be about the same 20 minutes or so depending on traffic.
Come on down and look it over. Honda is a great employer!

Thanks for the help.
Funny how when you mention Lincoln everyone knows that means Honda! We should hear something this week. Keeping our fingers crossed.
Does anyone have any pictures of the area?

I have a different take on the area. I was a teacher in St Clair county while hubby worked at Honda. Yikes. We knew we had to move before our kids got old enough to go to school. The classroom I was in to teach Literature didn't even have a bookshelf. How can I successfully teach literature without even a bookshelf? Books?? I had to pay for those myself. Supplies?? Again, all out of pocket.
Racism is rampant in the area too. I am quite liberal, and I was amazed on a daily basis by the opinions I encountered.
Hubby wasn't happy at Honda either, but he was salaried, the hourly people might be different, I don't know.

Thank you for the pics Bravo. My hubsund is going to take a few for me before he comes home. I am hoping if things go well I will be able to come down over Christmas time to take a look around.
Are there any AL related websites I should take a look at?
Also would you know where I could get the lowdown on the schools in St. Clair county? (I think that is primarily where we will be) I would also like to look at school rankings and test scores. Is there regulated testing in AL like there is in MI?
Thanks for the help. Hopefully we will be seeing you guys in AL soon =)
