Singer Nat "King" Cole, born in Montgomery in 1917. His family move to Chicago when he was 4 years old.
In early 1956, Cole returned to Alabama, where his integrated group played to a segregated audience in the municipal auditorium in Birmingham. Four members of the White Citizens Council attacked him on the stage. Although hurt, Cole returned to the stage and completed his performance for the audience of 4,000. Member of the U.S. House of Representatives 1897-1915 and Senate 1915-1927. Underwood was twice placed in nomination for the presidency of the United States, at the Democratic conventions of 1912 and 1924.
