Traveling from South Florida to Leeds Alabama and would like to see the state and not travel the interstate. Can someone recommend a route or rather a route not to travel to avoid speed traps.

Your best bet will likely to exit I-10 near Chipley, then travel through Dothan and Troy to Montgomery. Once in Montgomery hit US 31 and travel up through Clanton.

Coming up to the Birmingham on US 280, then east on I-459 right into Leeds. (Right onto Dunavant Valley Road off of US 280 directly into Leeds without a freeway and a beautiful view of the horse country in the south metro)

Alternately; US 231 due north to US 78, then west right into Leeds is a nice drive and gives one a real sense of the Appalachian foothills. (this is most direct)

If I were you, I would get off of the interstate in Tallahassee onto Hwy 27. This will take you straight up through Georgia all the way to Columbus. Just south of Columbus you can get on Hwy 280 which will take you all the way into the Birmingham area. I used to live in Tallahassee and this was a nice scenic route. It also makes a lot of sense in terms of the direction traveled. That's a lot of country though so if you are looking for known restaurants and things like that, I would make stops for gas, food, and other things in Tallahassee or Columbus.

Went to Tifton, GA and then went diagonally across the state. Nice ride, cotton and peanuts around being harvested, took I think 280 then 25N- now that is mountain driving.

There is very little to see in Hoover unless you like malls. I live here and I try to a avoid Hoover. I does have some decent areas to live, but nothing interesting to see.

If you're coming to Bham (an I'm not saying whether you should) then come to the city proper.

yes... i didn't see this thread. i would have definitely reccomended taking a similar route near mount cheaha. one of the more scenic areas in the state. fall foliage probably not quite up to peak, but you may have seen some decent colors.
